I voted "other" because there is no option for waiting longer than 3 months. I always wait at least 2 years - with XP I waited until SP2 was out and well tested; with Vista I waited and decided 'no way' - lots of hassles for little gain.

I wouldn't base my decision on buying new hardware on a bundled OS at all. I buy laptops for power, portability and features. I usually choose the OS at a later stage, either upgrading it, wiping and reinstalling. However if I need a new lappy when Win 7 is around next year, I'll opt for it. If by then I need a new Mac laptop too, it obviously won't be an issue either.

But regarding your question which I assume is more to do with when people will start to use Windows 7 as their PC OS as choice, the RC is already pretty stable, so it's likely to be streets ahead of Vista when released early 2010, so people may well start to adopt it faster. Most technical people will wait until it's proved to be stable and there are no compat. issues with the final release before rolling it out.

Other - my Eee PC is already running Windows 7. :D

On a more serious note, I might get a netbook with it preinstalled provided it also has some sort of instant-on function, like Splashtop or Cloud. Then again, as I use my Eee almost exclusively for web browsing, I'm more likely to plump for something running Linux...

Why not buy a suitably-specified shiny recycled laptop, and install Windows 7 Release Candidate on it, just to get the experience of using Windows 7? Probably about half the price of the shiny new one...

    I'll just VM it thanks.

    3 months - I remember Vista... I want SP1 before I even touch it
I might have migrated to Vista by the time 7 comes out

I voted other because I use Vista and have done since jan 2007 without any problems so for me no need to upgrade to windows 7 when its released.Vista will have continued support for the foreseeable future.
    Cheers

Well since the RC (which is probably close to the version being released) is freely avalible form the Microsoft site.

I'd suggest If you get a new laptop with Vista or a Upgrade to XP. Download and stick the Win7 Trial on it for the next 6 - 9 months. If you like it but the OS if not stick XP (Or even better Linux!) back on the laptop!

If you can't guess I picked the last option I lovebeing awkward :D lol

I hope that the 'foreseeable future' extends beyond the 10th April 2012, which is when mainstream support for Vista is retired. ;)

    Thanks for the replies guys.

The reason I've asked is I'm thinking of getting a new laptop as my current Acer 1GB DDR memory isn't really up to the job of running Windows Server 2003 / 2008 + Exchange 2007 VMs. It'd cost £45 to buy a 1GB stick and assume we keep one of the 512s then still, that's best part of £50 gone for a total of 1.5GB. Seems no point when new laptops with 4GB can be bought for £400-450. Not to mention better CPU etc.

I think I'll wait until Windows 7 is released and just buy one then.
