I buy the own brand of tuna from asda or pilchards/sardines and mix it with dry dog/cat food. also I give scraps/plate scrapings and gravy from our meals. I am going to try the Gusto now I have seen it on here!

I personally have reservations about feeding a raw diet, have heard far too many stories about dogs getting bones lodged etc, thats just my feeling on it though, I know many people swear by it, but its not for me, i'm too much of a worrier.QUOTE

Whe I was a child our dog accidentally swallowed a chicken bone it got lodged in his backside and of course clogged him up. we have never given chicken bones after that. I think they are too splintery.

Tripe is very good for dogs so I've heard, and it's cheap.

We bought a beautiful 6 momth old labradore 4 weeks ago, She was being fed dried food by previouse owners, we decided to change her to a natural diet and she has taken to it really well, the biggest improvement has been with the number of times she goes for a poo, gone down from 9 times a day  to a much more managable 3

Was it a cooked bone? They are very dangerous as they are hard and stripped of meat - but raw meaty bones are softer and most importantly come with meat around them so the dog crunches them up and any sharp bits are "padded" by the meat. I have even fed these to very small puppies and they have had no problems!

But I can understand people having concerns and it is definitely not for everyone - and doesn't suit all dogs. Best thing is to find a food that suits your dog and stick with it.
  • Hi folks, just for info, have just started buying Jollyes Lifestage puppy/junior for my 7 springer pups. It seems to be as good as JWB and better than most others. It has chicken listed as the first ingredient, and is 30% protein, 20% oils which is supposed to be the minimum you should look for. It is also gluten free. Mum and Dad springer love it too, and all will eat it dry which is a bonus. It costs 14.95 for a 10kg bag so is good value when compared with the other supposed good brands.
  • My parents feed our dogs on a 3:1 mix of offal and meat scraps from the butchers (fit for human consumption but sold as dog food) and sticky working dog mix. It is very high calorie though, so you'd be better off using a different mixer for your dog. Sometimes dogs can develop an allergy to the cereals used in the food - even in wet dog food cereal is often an important component.

No dog is a fussy eater.
They can go 3 days without food, they're testing you.

If you only have dry food down for 3 days, they'll eventually eat it.
You've just taught him to be 'fussy'

Just because it has a high level of protein listed does NOT mean it's good quality protein...

I'd recommend buying either James Welbeloved, Burns or Arden Grange. The quality of the protein in those are far higher and better for the animals :)
