I've made homemade cordial before and its pretty easy but be warned....it's not cheap! So if you're looking at doing it to save money then I'd forget it!

I am finding it really hard to find a fruit cordial that isn't full of additives and things I can't pronounce whilst also not stupidly expensive. I am quite happy drinking water and tea only but OH loves juice so I was contemplating making some homemade cordial for him - does anyone else do this? :j
  • I have tried making elderflower cordial in the spring/summer, which was really lovely with sparkling water. However, it has a lot of sugar in it (which I suppose it has to, to stay fresh) and also ours went quite alcoholic which was not what we wanted!

There is a Lakeland book on preserving which has lots of recipes for cordials as well as jams etc.

I tried to make orange and lemon cordial last week but tbh it went down the sink. Without adding loads of sugar I wasn't sure how to make it work.

  • I made elderberry cordial last summer but it wasn't a success! Even diluted we found it very "cleggy" and not at all thirst quenching. I'll stick with my lemonade but, unfortunately, it needs a lot of sugar to make it palatable!

The elderflower one which Downsizing made sounds intriguing - especially as it turns alcoholic!!!!!

I make cordials and they are really easy to make if you have the fruit. I grow my fruit at the allotment and freeze it ready to make cordial when I want it. I suppose if you bought the fruit at full price then it would be expensive to make, but if you manage to get a reduced amount of fruit it would be worth it.

A cheap cordial to make is 'Blackberry cordial' as blackberries are free in the autumn if you go picking, so if you froze them you could use them all through the year to make cordial.

To make blackberry cordial you need:
    2 cups of cold water
    2 cups of granulated sugar
    300g blackberries (fresh or frozen)
    2 tablespoons of lemon juice
(the blackberries can be substituted for any fruit-raspberries are really nice).
The recipe I use is here (approx half way down the page)

As it makes quite a lot, I freeze some of it ready made for another day.
