Seriously though, our neighbours are not metered and, as such, I suppose don't think about the amount of water they use/waste. They left a hosepipe running for approx 30 hours last week - not on for any reason, just an oversight or one of the kids - but it was spraying against our fence so I could hear it every time I got in and out of car. Eventually went round and told them! Felt like saying "you wouldn't let that happen if you were metered"!!!!
Just such a total waste of water, whereas us metered people are so water aware - aren't we everyone?
Which is why it is inevitable that we all will eventually be metered - and perhaps it is only fair.0 -
Melbury I would have told them sooner. I'm not metered but I'm careful with a valuable resource. Same with Electric and Gas. Drives my OH potty that I sit in the dark etc if I don't need the light on!!

Would have told them sooner, but they were out when I first noticed and next morning I was running late for work and just didn't have time to go round, which is why there was such a delay. I suppose at first I thought it must be on for a reason - in the summer they leave the sprinkler on all night sometimes.
Yes metering for all is the only fair way really and would certainly make people more aware of trying to save water. After all we pay for all other utilities based on usage.Stopped smoking 27/12/2007, but could start again at any time :eek:0 -
I had to laugh, but I also agree with you Melbury.
We are 1 adult, 1 child and metered - sewage charge is 90% of water used. But we're also out of the house all day! I know how annoyed I get about this!
We even had a letter to say a new meter was going to be installed..so I asked around the neighbours, funnily enough only myself and one other were having this done, even though the meters were put in all the houses when they were built.
The only common factor between us having the new meters is that we are smaller families (they are 2 adults) and the previous occupants were larger (theirs was 2 adults, 2 kids, ours was 2 adults and 3 kids - stay at home mum as well).
We wonder whether they think the meter isn't working properly as consumption will have dropped considerably since we moved in!
Makes you wonder sometimes!Back on the DFW Wagon:
CC - £3,300 on 0% til 04/2020
CC - £4,500 on 0% til 02/2019
Loan - £12,063.84 as at 4/1/180 -
Had all the other houses changed owners recently, normally the water companies only switch to metered supplies on the change of ownership of a property, the builders may have just installed meters originally but water company decided to stay as water rates instead. And as you are out all day, it doesn't affect the water usage. You are still only paying for the water you use. that is the point0

The reason your sewerage charges are higher is that it will cost your water company far more to treat wastewater than it does to treat your potable mains water. As has been stated, you are only charged on 90% of your water in, so you are in effect not penalised for being out during the day.
Just don't leave a tap running... Also you could contact your water company for a sava-flush bag or hippo if you have older style cisterns...Waddle you do eh?0
