The above is correct. Banks have the right to take the money from savings account but.................not JSA! They are not allowed to take this!

On what do you base this assertion?

Banks aren't allowed to take JSA for charges but banks can keep putting more and more charges in ;)

Another way of looking at that is that they refused you money but you went ahead and spent it anyway. Some may call that theft. They do in France. We ought to treat it more seriously over here as well.

If they didn't want you to spend the £500, they could have refused the debit transactions.

If you go into unauthorised debt on one account (ie an overdraft which you have not agreed with the bank) then it is understandable that they use money from another of your accounts to reduce or pay off that debt.

    I see no problem.

...I agree its probabley in the terms & conditions and this is a lesson for all here the read them even if they are in small faint print.
Another would be to increase your authorised overdraft limit asap & keep savings/current account in different organisations. As Martin says it is the job of financial organisations to extract as much money from us and our job to do the same to them...
  • well i can confirm that after a lengthy argument i have recieved the money back as well as a extra £250 as an apology , so you could say a result!

It may be a result for you but overall its disgraceful to be honest. The banks are rolling over and paying out for silly things now.

You had no grounds for £250 to be paid to you and they had done nothing wrong. Sure, they could easily agree to let you have the money back as that is a lending decision and with you able to show JSA, its a fairly easy lending decison to make. Not a complaint.

Banks have a load of faults and need to be taken to task in a number of areas but in this case nothing was wrong.

I suppose technically, all this bank did was to TAKE BACK THEIR OWN MONEY!
