Haven't read all the posts on this thread but just want to agree that I'm fed up of everytime I log on, another thread has been moved, for no apparent reason to this sub forum, you end up not being able to find anything, so not bothering.
Surely the only three holiday forums needed are UK holidays, overseas holidays and days out. Anything else is just superfluous and confusing!:(

And while I'm on the subject, what's all this with incessant merging of threads?
If it just leads to threads with hundreds of posts, then people (well me anyway!) just can't be bothered to trawl through them all. Just leave em alone!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hmmm, I check back now and we seem to have quite a few posts being moved - but I can see no rationale behind what is and isn't moved- it's a mess!
Who decides what does and doesn't fall into, 'planning, itineraries and what to do' - you could probably put 90% of posts under that heading!
I'm sticking with a huge preference for a sub board for budget airlines (although all airlines might even make more sense) and another for all those currency questions of which variations on a theme appear several times daily. Would also not be a bad idea to lump insurance, passports and visas in with this section too, as has been suggested by others.0 -
Yeah... i agree with incapuppy...
most of the stickies at the top of this board are about planning, so they need to move. a lot of the other threads that haven't been moved, need to be moved..
all in all. just move EVERYTHING from the old forum, to this one, and then we'll tell you the 4 or 5 threads (out of 2000 pages worth) that need to go back to the main board, as they're the ones about bargains

It's odd how this board is split up, and yet Motoring and Public Transport are together on one board.Let us be grateful to people who make us happy, they are the charming gardeners who make our souls blossom. - Proust0

I've just had a look here and there still appears to be no real distinction between the two different boards.
Its obviously not working so why not merge the two back together as they were before.0 -
blue_haddock - there is now a discussion going on the main board with Martin about what we can do with the boards etc etc...0

I haven't read all the posts on here but here is my point of view. Next month i'm travelling long haul, alone, and for the first time. In a sub-section such as holiday planning I would have liked stickies such as "What to take on holiday" - e.g. copies of passports etc/paperwork , links to useful sites such as FCO, "Baggage" section - some basic ideas to help first time fliers. I know there is a thread called "fear of flying"
http://http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showthread.html?t=1392923&page=2
and the post by Beaker99 really really put my mind at rest about flying. (I have flown to Turkey twice before but someone else made all the arrangements AND kept me calm!) A thread or post like this would be useful in a subsection. There are a number of people flying for the first time and surely there must be basic tips for almost all flights, short or long haul, such as "Tips/How to pack suitcase", "if long haul, tips on surviving the long journey." I also recall seeing a thread where someone explained to a flying newbie the whole process from arriving at the airport (how to check in) to boarding the plane. This would have been fantastic to read a few years back when i was flying for the first time.
Maybe also a section for "keeping kids entertained when flying etc."
I do like the idea of a sub-section on the overseas holidays thread but it could perhaps be more succinct. Only my opinion! I've used this board alot to help me plan my trip to New York but it took some reading and it was actually some of the basics I wanted. (the new york thread was VERY helpful but I had to search elsewhere for some of the flying basics.)0 -
the thing is quickstepqueen that this is moneysavingexpert, so not really plan everything about your holiday.
fear of flying, what to put in a suitcase, etc, haven't really got much to do with moneysaving, and there are forums elsewhere on the internet that deal with the generics.
i know there can be a lot of banter between people on the NYC thread, and i might be a bit of a culprit, but there is a wealth of moneysaving information, including the following
best times to book
cheap hotels, and ways to get a cheap hotel cheaper that don't come up on some websites.
cheap flight discussions
getting into manhattan the money saving way, and around, by promoting the use of the subway rather than the more expensive taxi.
it might be wonderful to have everything in one place, but the first and foremost thing about this website and these forums is moneysaving, and sometimes people do forget that (me included) and we go off on wild tangents etc...
but, it is about deals, and where to find them, it is about helping people get the flight, or how to save some cash on the car service as it is easier than the subway with luggage.. etc etc...
what to take on holiday IMO hasn't got anything to do with moneysaving...
all what i've said is my opinion, and many people may disagree, but, thereivesaidit

Actually Markymoo I kind of agree with what you're saying. You are right, this is a moneysaving site and people, including myself tend to go off tangent. I'm so used to hitting this site for just about everything that I forget it's main aim.
I guess my suggestions were therefore more timesaving. (Though some may say their time does equal money!)I was just fed up of constantly looking at other sites to get all the info I wanted. Perhaps having a thread that tells you what paperwork to take isn't strictly moneysaving but I still would like a sticky on packing a case , as in my eyes it's sort of moneysaving. From posts in different threads I've learned from about keeping packing limited to avoid charges for excess weight, to save small bottles from samples and decant products into them instead of taking the full size product or buying overpriced small sizes etc.
It's good however, that we can all give our opinions about these boards.0
