I won a holiday but 3 weeks before departure they have cancelled it

I have recieved an email this morning and here is the body of it:

I just want to confirm that following our conversation recently about the mix-up over the letter mistakenly sent to you re the TNT Magazine prize to Edinburgh, I immediately cancelled your hotel booking at the HIlton hotel in Edinburgh and your flights with ScotAir - I just wanted to let you know that I have spoken to both the hotel and the airline personally to make sure your bookings have been cancelled.

The bookings havn't been cancelled. I phoned them and checked yesterday. I'll see what Trading Standards have to say.

This sounds very suspicious. My very cynical self is wondering - when you contacted the magazine - did you use a number you found yourself? Or one on the letter they sent? It just doesn't sound right at all!

It's such a shame, I remember you posting on the Scotland board asking for info, when you had just found out you had won. Hope you make it up here!

If the booking hasn't been cancelled you could always just turn up - but might have to be prepared to share if they have conned other people aswell.

The airport is only about a 10 minute DLR trip from my boyfriends house so we have decided that we will go there and turn up for the flights and see what happens. If they refuse us we will just come home again. Thats unless Trading Standards come up with anything in the meantime.

Could it be a scam someone pretnedign it has been cancelled so they get a free holiday ?

If the flight and hotel are still booked you can go surely as you have the tickets.

I telephoned the Hilton again yesterday and the hotel room has definately been cancelled now so we won't be going on this trip

I am waiting for a reply from Trading Standards to see if they can do anything for us. Fingers crossed.

Crazy! A letter that baisiclly says 'tough - you're not having the prize' is terible customer service. If, for whatevr reason they had to withdraw the prize then should be a lenghty explanation apology and some form of compensation at the least.... I hope the outcome is a good one for you. Best of luck
