well, in the process of moving the machine I dropped it and broke the hand crank
Might handsew the first project while deciding what to do
If it's only the end of the crank that's broken, maybe you could add a motor & whoever installs it could service the machine as well? My mum got a motor added to hers & it was great!0 -
Hello all, I was wondering whether any of you helpful lot could help me?
I have been making 20 billion (well 51) sock monkeys for my wedding at the end of the month. the sewing macine I was using seems to have pretty much given up, when you press the pedal there is a whiring but nada happens - plus the handle is very stiff to turn and sticks completly at times.
Now... this is not my machine which makes me nervous! I am a complete novice but over the course of 51 sock monkeys I have learn some things! I have cleaned out the bottom bit around the bobbin, plus taken out the bobbin holder thingy and blown about 30 years of fluff into my face but that doesn't seem to have helped.
I was wondering whether it needs oiling - do I need to get proper oil? And how do I oil it - do I need to unscrew bits rather than just pointing it in the general direction!
Any help or suggestions would be very gratefully recieved - plus please point out the obvious if I have missed somethingThe machine is a Firster Rossman, Euro 10 SP if that means anything to someone!
Thank you in advance

First of all could you do me a favour, press the pedal and then at the same time gently turn the wheel on the side. It might need a new belt by now?
Also if you turn the wheel by hand without pressing thepedal how does it feel, does it feel stiff, or free?I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the Old style MoneySaving boards.

I have tried the pressing and turning - it feels stiff and won't turn without extreme encouragement!
It is the same if I try and turn the wheel by hand - very stiff and difficult to turn... thanks for your input so far!DFW Nerd #1310 -
I'm just thinking aloud.......
Maybe the motor's turning but the belt is loose, and that's the whirring sound you're getting.........see, it'll power but not turn the mech if it's worn loose....does that make sense to you, does it sound like the belt's whizzing round but not catching the mech/cog?
Hoping it's not the motor gone.
The two zigzag fabric feeders is there any fabric or thread stuck in there, have another look underneath, get a torch so you can see really clearly.
Have a look see if there's anything on this page.....

Hmm - there is whirring, but it doesn't seem like it is not catching if you see what I mean - it is almost like the battery is running out.
I will borrow a torch tomorrow and try and investigate properly - thanks for the link but nothing jumps out... again, thanks for your help so far, I will update againDFW Nerd #1310 -
Just a thought, one of my machines had a safety lock on the wheel if you turned it clockwise whilst pressing it in slightly, machine would make noise but no movement.
To unlock, I think it was turn anti clockwise whilst pressing slightly.
I was always putting it on by mistake.0 -

Hiya,
Have you tried the folks on the Sewing Room Thread in the Special Occasions board? Not had chance to read back, I'm on quick lurk so it might be something you already tried!
Hope you get it sorted.
