Right - all I can think of is to re-check the threading up, check the tension isn't too loose, also check the feed is set correctly (is the feed plate moving forwards and backwards when you try to sew?).

can you open the bottom where the bobbin is housed and look at what happens to the top thread while it is working(turn wheel slowly by hand not with the foot control),it should take the needle down, the thread should loop around the bobbin housing and as it lifts,it should bring the bottom thread (from out of the bobbin) up with it to make a sort of link which is the top and bottom stitch ,then down again etc.

If you have tried everything else mentioned
tension etc,I remember one time I had this
problem just like you nothing had worked
and then in desperation I rang John Lewis
and spoke to the Elna lady who brough my
attention to this.Look in the pic below if
you look close there is a red small dot.

This is in all machines although some
may not be marked out like this.just
a couple of dots of oil in this place
put mine right.Until she mentioned it I
    never knew it was there.
left it to soak in and it righted it and
my machine was back to normal. I always
make sure I do it every year now

its def the problem that culpepper suggested so i think i just havn't done the bobbin properly.
is plastic rather than metal (is a temp until my jones treadle is fixed) so dont know if the oil would work

have a look at this link... you can disregard the bit about winding the bobbin on but further down it shows u how it should fit in the machine.

in the instructions I have it says that when I have threaded it to put the thread in the 'space' but not sure what space this should be in. Under where is am putting the bobbin? towards the foot plate?? I forgot how much i hated bobbins lol
