Ooh I love soft cheese and cucumber:D

One to avoid though is jacket potatoes and marmite, thought it might be nice as I love both. Not my best idea:rotfl:

  • Doesn't sound very frugal but in the long run it is. Instead of wine in a risotto I use a splash of value/own label [STRIKE]nail varnish remover[/STRIKE] brandy.

    Cocoa in chilli.
    Put the kettle on. ;)

Mine's worcester sauce, in just about anything savoury (including bolognese sauce, stews, casseroles, curries, tomato sauce for pizza/pasta...). I've had to put the bottle at the back of the cupboard where I can't easily get to it as I was getting through so much of it! :o

I'll be interested to know how your double-spaghetti bolognese turns out, sandy - you might have invented a new delicacy! :)

I put chilli in everything! Actually, it does work in moderation, putting some chilli flakes in when you are cooking rice for example, doesn't taste spicy, but heightens your taste buds when you are eating other food....

A dollop of HP Sauce in gravy for Shepherd's/Cottage Pie is very . In fact, a dollop of HP Sauce is great in ANY gravy - maybe not for chicken or pork though.
  • Baked beans instead of pasta sauce

Mix in a bit of cheese, delish :)

    Hi Sandy:hello:

I'm always throwing some strange ingredient in my food. Sometimes it works (saffron in pilau rice), sometimes it doesn't (cinnamon in hoummous - only i spilt LOADS :rotfl:)

Squeaky started a thread about this not so long ago - a mistake that worked

I'll add your thread to that one later to keep the ideas together :)

    Thanks

I tend to add Marmite to a fair bit of stuff now I think about it. I always put a couple of spoonfuls of Marmite in chilli, shepherd's pie, bolognese. But then I am obsessed (a touch :o) with Marmite! One of my favourite comfort foods is macaroni cheese out of a tin, with Marmite stirred through once it's been heated! Yum!

One mistake not to be recommended is adding some frozen summer fruits in syrup to bolognaise sauce. I'd taken it out of the freezer thinking it was a bag of frozen red wine, but realised as soon as I added it that it looked a bit 'lumpy'. When I saw the strawberry I knew :) Trying to be frugal I fished the fruit out, added a load of seasoning and red wine, and told OH that the wine was a particularly 'fruity' vintage ...

I do that with curry powder - about a tsp.
