This may be a numb question but - here goes: if once the dongle is unlocked, what charges will be incurred when using another sim card either in this country or abroad. Maybe I'm getting too old but I would be interested in any views given that I am travelling in Europe quite a bit now

Depends on the SIM card and the country. What are you thinking?

I went through all the stuff above because I had 2 dongles and felt that one worked better than the other so I got it unlocked. However I'm still using the same 3 SIM.
As I say above I too travel a lot abroad, but I can't (or won't ) use the 3 SIM abroad. Even if it will work (I think it will as my Italian one works here in UK) but the costs are astronomical and totaly prohibitive for anything other than perhaps email downloads if you're desperate. I will probably look for a local SIM when I get there. And hopefully use my new unlocked dongle. The only good advice I have picked up is not to tie myself into any sort of contract.
Meanwhile no great speed advantage, but at least I have 2 dongles to try !!

Reckon Cliddy has just about summed it up for me - thanks. 3 used to have a "Home and Away" service which was useful in some countries ie you could use the dongle etc in those countries from your contracted allowance but, and quite without warning or notification, they seem to have withdrawn this and cost me cash whilst recently in Italy. So, what I'm wondering is say I'm in country a and have a sim card for that country can I persuade the dongle to use that sim card and, if so, how might charges be worked out? Phew!

I've just created a full response to the above and lost the lot thanks to the link going down. Which proves what a useless solution it all is.
So luckily you only get the short version now, although I was quite pleased with the long version !!!
If you unlock your modem like I did, the SIM you buy abroad SHOULD work in it, but don't bank on using same dongle AND SIM back here.
My Italian dongle unlocked works in the UK (well it does if the link stays up !)
My question and perhaps yours is how to find that SIM abroad (in my case France)
  • This is aimed toward 2much2match who seems to have been so helpful in unlocking Huawei E156G dongles. Will this work regardless of where the dongle was bought. My friend has just come back from working in Oman and would like to use her Huawei e156g in the UK.
I assume "5) Enter the following Number where it says unlock code 64460161 and Press Send Code." was specific only to Cliddy particular dongle and the code will differ dependent on the IMEI code of each dongle?

    TIA!

Yes it will work regardless where the dongles from, and the code is based on the specific IMEI of the dongle, if you want to PM me the IMEI number I will send you back the unlock code
  • That is very kind of you!
Unfortunately there does not seem to be an Imei number anywhere on the dongle. Is there some way to find out what it is?

If you download the Huawei Code tool Software from here:

    www. nextgenserver.com/support/index.php?_m=downloads&_a=viewdownload&downloaditemid=71

(Remove spaces from the website address)

make sure that the dongle software is not running and run the Huawei code tool. Click scan for Huawei dongle and the IMEI details will appear in the window
