Could it be a Canal+ decoder? Is there anything in French on the box?

Having looked up CGV it does sound like it's a decoder. So if it's all connected up correctly either the box isn't working, or the TV is set to PAL instead of SECAM maybe ? France uses SECAM but I'm not sure if this is for analogue or digital broadcasts.

Also is there more than one SCART socket, I'm wondering if it's an RGB socket or something. I know what I mean :-)

There is some form of Philips free sat box literally a tiny little bo with a blue light and no buttos. Then there is another flat black thing that says CGV I think its sort of a posh aerial. aerial attached to box

Is it a Philips terrestrial digital receiver connected to an internal aerial?

Are you sure there's no model number on it? Underneath, on a label? On the back?

    So it's a Philips DTR220? It's a terrestrial digital receiver, not a satellite receiver.

It sounds like you have an internal aerial? I expect the problem is simply you have bad reception and when you walk around the room you are interfering with the signal depending on where you stand.

Do you not have an external TV aerial socket in your house? It would be best to use an outside aerial. If not, try positioning your internal aerial in different places and pointing in different directions and see if you can get a better signal.
