Problem with a thomson 'box'

Options
Could anyone help?
Our thompson top up tv box will NOT turn on!

Hubby switched on yesterday & nothing happened, won't tell you what he said.....!! He missed the footie:mad:

So I followed instructions in the guide manual, interupted power, reconnect, wait for steady light, all looked as normal. But nothing happens when On pressed.

It does go through the ritual, Red light flashing followed by three lights below flashing in turn, then green light flashing

But no amount of pressing DTR or the usual On brings it out of standby!

It does however continue to flash even though no one near! Spooky

Any ideas please? It was purchased in Aug 2008 from Argos.

There isn't a tech helpline in the manual.

  • Hi Sirlizzie

We had exactly the same problem yesterday with our Thomson Box and apparently so has loads of others, theres a big thread going on another forum!

Unplug your box wait a few seconds, then plug back in and then press standby button on box and hold it in until amber light starts flashing, as soon as you see amber light flash let go of standby button and press the up, down, left and right button on your box (make sure its in that order) and after a while the light should go back to red and it should be okay. thats the info i got from the tech guys at topuptv. Hope that helps x

Thanks Jaspersmum, at least its not just us then.

So all button pressing is on actual box?

    Off to try now

Hi. yes all button pressing is on the box not on the remote! good luck hope it works for you. The only thing is any recordings youve made it will lose them all!

    Just tried, very fiddly
Box on permanent red, unplugged, replugged, light flashed, lower lights came on did press ON button in and held in, and pressed up down left right but all time i was doing this the tiny green light flashed

Barely saw other colours (lol) did i do it wrong? It's still as it was, main red light on occasional flas and the gren flashing intermittently

Given it another go, still the same

Did yours go to green (on) after you had done the wizardry?
Or did you have to use the remote to switch on?

Sorry to be a pain, but it doesn't seem to be working for me ( which is par for the course!)
  • Hi

Did you put plug back in and press standby button on box straight away and keep it pressed in? then as soon as red/orange light comes on let go of standby button and press the up down left right buttons and then wait a bit and then ours just went to red light after about 45 seconds and we just switched on like normal with the remote then. The tech guy did say if this way didnt work for us the other way is when you press the standby button in after plugging back in wait for the red/orange light let go and press the menu then ok buttons on the box instead, but luckily the other way worked for us.
  • Any luck Sirlizzie?

No, looks as dead as a Dodo, refusing to come out of the 'red'

I have been reading the other forum threads and it looks like a massive cockup by topuptv.

    So many boxes have failed.

If i still can't get this up and running again I wonder what Topup will do for everyone as all the boxes went at the same time?

I'll try again but am more than annoyed as we only got this in August and its their fault not ours
  • Aww sorry to hear youve had no luck in getting in working, dont give up keep trying it and hope it works eventually for you. Does look like a lot of people are still having problems with it though and i did read some people had took theirs back to Argos or wherever they bought it from. Maybe if its still dead you could take it back?

Thanks for your help, I'll give another few tries, from the stop press showing on the TopupTv website they are very aware of the problem, and are showing a couple of fixits, though if you have a redlight that persists 'then it may have encountered a fatal problem'

But from what i have read on the other forum, it seems 'tough luck'
