I wish I'd known VLC works on the Mac before paying for DivX “You can please some of the people some of the time, all of the people some of the time, some of the people all of the time, but you can never please all of the people all of the time.”0

Truecrypt - one of the best encryption systems available (free) http://www.truecrypt.org/
You can use Mobile Me - http://www.me.com or a variety of other services to store files remotely.

Excellent, thank you very much! :A“You can please some of the people some of the time, all of the people some of the time, some of the people all of the time, but you can never please all of the people all of the time.”0

Am I right in thinking that to install a programme it's as simple as dragging the icon into apps folder and similarly to uninstall/delete an item I just send it to trash?
Also, is there an alternative to installing Realplayer to listen to radio 1/2 live please?“You can please some of the people some of the time, all of the people some of the time, some of the people all of the time, but you can never please all of the people all of the time.”0 -
Depends on the app, some are in DMG files, which you double click to mount, then inside the folder there may be an installer, or you may just have to drag to the apps folder. Each and every one is different. Always read the read-me files which come with programs to check first.
Can you nto just listen directly via the web browser? I don't use those services on the Mac, but I'm sure someone else will know!0 -
Think I've mastered the downloads now and which ones can be dragged and dropped and which ones are DMG files
A slight problem ... I've installed X11 v.2.3.3 for GIMP 2.6.6 but it says I need the new version OS X 10.5.7 but the updater says there isn't a newer version available
Current version is 10.5.6“You can please some of the people some of the time, all of the people some of the time, some of the people all of the time, but you can never please all of the people all of the time.”0 -

There's a feature called FileVault, which basically turns your user folder into an encrypted disk image, which is then mounted every time you log in. You can find instructions for using it here. You can't use you Mac while it's working its magic, so if you're going to try it out, I'd recommend turning it on last thing at night and letting it run overnight, as it can take some time to set itself up. Once it's done, no one will be able to access your files without knowing your password (including you!).Am I right in thinking that to install a programme it's as simple as dragging the icon into apps folder and similarly to uninstall/delete an item I just send it to trash?
Generally, yes. If you select the file in question and press cmd-i, it'll tell you if it's an application or an installer package. Also, is there an alternative to installing Realplayer to listen to radio 1/2 live please?
RealPlayer on the Mac is a very different beast to RealPlayer on Windows. It really is just an application for playing Real files and nothing else, so don't be wary of installing it if the horribly bloated computer-invading mess that is the Windows version has put you off.
That being said, you could try installing Windows Media Components for QuickTime, which allows you to play Windows Media files in QuickTime.
If you go the RealPlayer route, there's a nifty BBC Radio widget for the dashboard.A slight problem ... I've installed X11 v.2.3.3 for GIMP 2.6.6 but it says I need the new version OS X 10.5.7 but the updater says there isn't a newer version available

Mac OS X 10.5.7 hasn't been released yet, though Apple have been seeding builds to developers quite a lot of late, so I'd say it should be released pretty soon.0 -
To save me looking around and wasting my time downloading rubbish can anyone suggest a free video converter something like iSkySoft so that I can rip DVD's to the Mac and convert them so they can be played on the Mac or PSP or iPod.
Thanks in advance.0 -

Use MacTheRipper to copy the DVD onto your Mac, and then HandBrake to convert it.
HandBrake can convert it straight from the DVD if you have VLC installed, but then your DVD drive is spinning for a long time as it converts it. So it's best to rip it first, and then do the conversion.0 -

Whichever side of the fence you sit on, it's a topic that chides with the board rules and shouldn't be discussed. Can't be that difficult to find something from Google to do it though.0
