Thanks! I'm currently having a look at the free trial of Moneydance which someone else mentioned to me. It looks good so far :)

CMD + Backspace Key = Move to Trash

I found that the backspace key alone will delete highlighted text, but great to know about the CMD button :T

Hang on, whats the point in running Windows on it? Lol! You could have purchased this and saved yourself £1070.33 + £100 ish for the Windows licence :p

I'd stick with using Mac OSX

    Quite! ;)

I have absolutely no intention of contaminating my beloved Mac with M$ <spit> products :D

14% discount thanks to my son made it cheaper and I can now sell my Dell D420 for £250 - £300 thus I don't have to carry around 2 laptops ;o))) now just need to get rid of another 3 PC's and just keep my best 2 with XP and Vista on ;o)))

I made the switch to a Macbook but still retain a Dell PC. Can't really see what all the fuss is about with the Mac; for every advantage there's an oversight or disadvantage. The lack of a delete button I can't seem to get over. You mean I can't click an icon on my desktop and delete it without right clicking?!

You can't figure out why they'd make it difficult to accidently delete stuff?

    Really?!?

    Try pressing cmd-backspace.
Plus the whole compatibility thing is pretty awful.

    Compatibility?
Plus the dgm thing - why so convoluted?

Sure, opening a DMG and dragging an application to your applications folder is convoluted, whereas downloading a zip file, unzipping it, running the installer, waiting for it to finish, maybe restarting your computer, then deleting the installer and original zip file is perfectly simple and intuitive.

Using a DMG file is no more convoluted than using a CD/DVD.
Yes it's fast and looks pretty but I still do all my photoshop stuff on the PC otherwise it'd take me all week on the Mac.

I know lots of pro photographers. Not a single one uses a PC. Every one of them would laugh at the suggestion they use a PC. How's your RAW support out of the box in Windows? How about colour management? How does Aperture run on it?

I would suggest you download a demo of Photoshop for Mac and give it a try. You might be surprised (it started off life as a Mac application btw).

It's really sad when someone spends all that money on a computer, but they refuse to try to get the best out of it. It really is a total waste, and you would have been better off with a Dell. Still, it's your money, so whatever.

Perhaps in future, if you are unsure of something, maybe you could come on here and ask instead of assuming that it's all a big oversight on Apple's part?

Ok, I've been bitten by the bug after a recent trip to the Apple store and am now in possession of a brand new, shiny Macbook Pro :j :j :j

    Congrats! :T
The one thing I am struggling to find, which unfortunately ties me to the PC still, is a decent personal finance software to replace MS Money. I've been using this for 10+ years now so would prefer something with a similar format which can also handle large volumes of accounts. I've tried the demo version of iBank but it fell over and couldn't cope with the amount of data I threw at it

Quicken Financial Life for Mac is coming out soon. You might wait and give it a try when it does.

You could also try running MS Money in CrossOver Mac.

Mac users generally don't need financial software, as after buying a Mac, we have no money left. ;)

You can say that again!!! :rotfl:

I've spent most of the day playing with Moneydance 2008 uploading all my accounts for this year and I'm really pleased with it so far.

If it's possible to fall in love with an inaminate object, then I can say I'm truly head over heels with my MB :smileyhea

Btw, I know where your avatar comes from now ;)

ETA: I've bookmarked those two links in case I need them at a later date, thanks

Couple of links to a huge selection of free and/or Open Source Mac OS X software:

    http://web.mac.com/simon_elliott/simon_elliott%40mac.com/Software.html

    http://www.opensourcemac.org

Finally for an enormous list of keyboard shortcuts to do almost anything in any combination read the full list from Apple here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1343

There are three main combos for deletion and managing the Trash (unlike Windows):

    Command+Delete = Move to Trash
    Shift+Command+Delete = Empty Trash
Option+Shift+Command+Delete = Empty Trash (no confirmation)

(Command being the Apple/Propeller key as previously mentioned)

PS I use both platforms, but Adobe CS, Photoshop in particular, is much better on the Mac, it's a traditional Mac application and has links and structure that make it more coherent and user friendly on the Mac IMO. I've been using Photoshop since v2, I have it on Windows as well, but for all my serious design and photography work, the Mac is always used. The colour management and gamma is far more accurate for a start. Windows I use for plenty of other things though :) (that said I was using Excel on a Mac long before it was even ported and released for Windows!)

Thanks for that, it's a great help! :A

Now the other thing I need to know, and perhaps the most important thing, is to do with security. As some of you might be aware from a recent thread, my friend had her Macbook stolen losing a lot of important data on it. Some people mentioned encrypting work and using the vault I think it was, or was it the Time Machine, to store files remotely

Also, where and how do I register with Apple, as someone else also suggested, so that if anyone attempts to take it into an Apple store it will be flagged up on their databases?
