:) Could always download Windows 7 - and use it for free until it's properly released?
Yes you could get a year out of it:

Watch the calendar. The RC will expire on June 1, 2010. Starting on March 1, 2010, your PC will begin shutting down every two hours. Windows will notify you two weeks before the bi-hourly shutdowns start. To avoid interruption, you’ll need to install a non-expired version of Windows before March 1, 2010. You’ll also need to install the programs and data that you want to use. (Learn more about installing Windows.)

I wonder if you change the date on your pc could you delay the shutdown?

I've not checked but assume that it is available to download on the MS site?

    Windows 7 on 512MB RAM?

Ubuntu or XP would be more suitable.

    I'm afraid not - Windows 7 requires 1gb.

I know, but the machines featured in this thread have 512MB installed. So unless the owners are capable of adding a RAM module, Windows 7 is out.

Maybe I'll try it out on my Netbook after I do the mod.

I've got windows 7 running fine on my aspire - 512mb ram, but a 2gb SD card using readyboost which is a native win 7 feature, runs great
Smile and be happy, things can usually get worse!

How does it run without the Windows 7 version of ReadyBoost?

If you have missed out on these Acer machines - don't worry the next gen of netbooks is just round the corner, according to article in PC Pro this month, the best bit is they will start at around £150! - sorry no link :(
