I take your point. So do you think I should have some antivirus and spyware software? If so, which ones are available for use on this Linux kit?
Personally No I don't think you need anything at the moment. My point is don't be complacent about it. Linux is pretty secure at the moment as it's not mainstram, if it becomes mainstream there will be attempts to hack it.
The people behioed the malware must know how these netbooks are flying off the shelves and are being sold as virus proof. I'd put money they have bought a few and are working on them, not many people will bother updating them just use them as is. In many cases thats the same as windows, use it out of the box and your bound to get infected. Patch it as soon as hotfixes come out and you are not secure but you a long way there.sputty01 wrote:As a Windows & Linux user myself I hate to join in the rant, but any form of system wide key logging isn't possible in flash, on ANY platform, due to the way flash applications are contained within a closed off environment. As for java applications on Linux a user would have to manually download, install AND give the software their administrative passwords to gain enough rights to be able to access any keys pressed... If you were stupid enough to take it that far I'm sure even if anti virus was present you'd manually add an exception as well.
Flash problems of late have been buffer overruns allowing the code to run outside the sandbox of Flash. it's a small risk, but not a non existant one.
As for passwords you only need to look how people ignore Vista's warning if you are making a system wide change (the grey screen saying "are you sure you want to install this virus" and how people blindly click on without reading to know that people are buound to put in an admin password when asked without wondering why.
Most windows machines I get to look at are running the main account as an admin anyway with no thought to security..0 -

Note though that it only has 8gb storage whereas the Currys/Dixons/Pc World offering has 80gb or it seems 120gb when it arrives.avedajunkie wrote: »You can still buy a refurbished Acer Aspire one AOA110-AW Netbook for £129.00, Free Delivery!!

The 80gb is a mistake and it should be 120gb, I've had that confirmed by DSG. Also, from DSG you get a 12 month warranty (just like you would a "new" one) this amazon one is only 90 days.avedajunkie wrote: »You can still buy a refurbished Acer Aspire one AOA110-AW Netbook for £129.00, Free Delivery!!

Do you mean that he buys the CDs and then 'rips' them to mp3 or some such?
Not sure what 'rips' means? He has a programme on the laptop that came with his music player that enables him to put his cd in the laptop and then add it to his music player? Sorry I hope that makes sense!
He currently uses the computer at his parents house to do this.
