First question to ask HSBC Russell Square is if it's a valid account number with them. If not, it will have rejected into a suspense account and is probably sitting there waiting to be claimed.

If it is a valid account, write a letter to 'the accountholder' with the sortcode and account number and ask HSBC to forward it on your behalf.

I don't see how you can know it is a valid account of HSBC. The online system will presumably have confirmed the acct number fits the normal pattern of account numbers, and will have accepted it based on that and a valid sortcode.

I still think you're better checking with HSBC first. I would have thought there was a good chance it had rejected into one of their accounts.

Legally, the recipient is obliged to return the money.

In that case I agree with jdan9 that you should be able to get your money back.

T&Cs of any account that I'm aware of make it the customer's responsibility to reconcile their acct and notify the bank of any error.

    Write to HSBC.

    Write to HSBC.

However do bear in mind, reading the example provided on wikipedia, that if the recipient has spent the money without realising, you may not be able to get it back.
