so is this person who has my money breaking the law by not returning it?0

I don't understand this
you're saying that if the bank sends me money by mistake they can recover it; but if anyone else makes a mistake then it can't be corrrected... seems very fair and legal.
I'm actually saying, the bank has no responsibility if it's not their mistake. Also they can't reveal to you the details of a strangers account. Of course the money can be recovered it's just not the bank's problem. They did what was asked of them. This is an open forum, anyone can post and I just did !0 -
Adam,
Do you know what sortcode you paid it to? If so, contact that bank directly yourself.:heartsmil When you find people who not only tolerate your quirks but celebrate them with glad cries of "Me too!" be sure to cherish them. Because these weirdos are your true family.0 -
There is in fact no law that says the bank can't help a customer that has made a mistake.
I agree that most banks would probably be reluctant to actually help a customer and would only act if they were threathened by the law or the regulators.
What a sad old world we live in.
Clearly time for more regulations.0 -
yes- I know the sort code.
That was my mistake, rather that 12 12 12, I typed 12 21 12. Well as an example.
How do i use the sort code to find the branch?0 -
How do i use the sort code to find the branch?
You're unlikely to be able to without a copy of the UK Clearings Directory to hand (and I'd wager that you've never seen one, which makes you... pretty lucky, to be honest.) Ask in the bank concerned and they'll probably be able to tell you.0 -
I googled a sortcode the other day and got the brach address and phone number.:heartsmil When you find people who not only tolerate your quirks but celebrate them with glad cries of "Me too!" be sure to cherish them. Because these weirdos are your true family.0
