Paid Money into the wrong account

Hello

A few months back I tried to pay some money to a friend. i stupidly got her sort code wrong and it ended up in the wrong persons account.

Despite calling and writing to my Bank many times they simply tell me it is my fault and there is nothing they can do to get my money back.

Is this true? It's not alot, £150- but still I'd like it back if I can have it.

What are my options?

I doubt you have many options. A few months is a long time to notice this sort of error, and the person who received that money has probably withdrawn it by now.

They are right to tell you that they can't do anything as its your fault and its gone into another persons account. Which they can't do anything without the permisson of the other person's account. And since they are not going to complain about free money the bank can't do anything. Since its your fault they can't do anything, unless you somehow find out who owns the account and ask them to pay the money back, but this is unlikly as the bank can't tell you due to Confidentiality laws

    interesting

if someone posts saying they have received money into their account from an unknown source and want to keep it, they are usually told that they can't and the bank will eventually recover the money

and if someone posts saying they have accidentally paid the wrong person then they are told there's no way of getting it back.

That's when the bank makes the mistake. In this case the bank followed instructions.

So if company A sends me £x by mistake I can keep it...? Because it was company As fault for sending me the money?

Probably not, but the bank carrying out the transaction has no responsibility, if not their mistake.

So yes I can spend the money...

It can't go both ways. Although I would expect the bank to retrieve the money from the person wh recieved it in error, if they don't then any money I should happen to recieve by accident, if at no fault with the bank, I can spend at will.

Yes but company A may try to recover it, All I'm saying is that it's not the bank's problem. The case is different if the bank has screwed up.

Ah, good luck to them, they don't know who I am! (and the bank can't surely tell them because of data protection act).

    Bring on typing errors! :D

I've actually been going back and forth with the bank for months.

I admit I was in error, all I want them to do is send a letter to HSBC to contact the customer and get it back.

So if someone sends in £1m to me I can spend it with wanton abandon? That seems criminal!
