we also were ripped off with this scam by Europcar in Ibiza! Also they scam you for insurance - we paid online for supposed full insurance but on arriving they told us it was only basic insurance & we would have to pay extra for full cover! Even after this we still had to give a €300 deposit! Cant understand that when we were now insured up to the eyeballs according to them? best to use a local firm as I think all the big companies are in this scam together!

I would also like to alert people to a potential issue - I recently hired a van from Hertz. I was told I'd need to return the van with a full tank and I wouldn't be charged. The electronic gauge initially indicated a full tank but within 2 mins of driving this dropped to 7/8. I refueled after 10 miles of driving and had to put £15 worth of fuel in - so the tank had been nothing like full when I hired it. I realised that I should have said something at the time but assumed that they'd go off the fuel gauge's indication rather than the actual tank so when I returned it (with a full indicated tank still) I was shocked when they charged me addition money for fuel!

I will be very wary of Hertz in the future.
  • I have travelled to France 3 or 4 times a year for a number of years now & am gob-smacked at all the cons the car rental companies get up to & are allowed to get away with !
This latest one was when I booked today via Auto Europe to pick up a car at Girona Airport.
I had picked up on these cross border charges which I had never heard of before but saw on Goldcar's "Other frequently asked questions" that From Spain, you can drive the vehicle into Portugal, France, Andorra & Gibraltar so thought that this would be fine.
Booked via Auto Europe (seeing that the car was coming via Goldcar)
& surprise surprise when I had paid via my credit card & was sent a confirmation email/voucher was informed that I would have to pay an additional 9 euros/day for my 10 days when I picked the car up as well as the charge for the full tank of petrol & no doubt an earful about the additional insurance
Spoke to both Auto Europe & Goldcar who then advised me to look under their Particular Terms & Conditions 7.5 to see that this was the case & I hadn't looked at the T&C's properly.
When I asked why this was not mentioned under "other frequently asked questions" I was told that I could cross the border but just that I wouldn't be covered !
Presumably I have been doing this for the last 8 years !!
Does anyone have any suggestions on who the best car rental company to deal with is ? ( Girona/Barcelona )
I see Avis do not have any cross border charges but that seems to be because their pricing structure appears to be on another
    planet !

    Many Thanks

    Milney
