I believe mags are VAT free - so saves 26p a subscriber doing it that way...

Correct. It was the old Ondigital, who thought it up. Magazines are VAT free but TV subscriptions attract VAT. It may only be a few pennies per cutomer but when you multiply it by the number of customers per year it's a tidy sum.

Why would anyone want to cancel? It's well worth £1.75p for all the great articles about the ancient movies available on Sky. As well as that there's info about exclusive series like "Lost" we'd get included in the license fee we pay anyway if Sky didn't have the money we pay them to poach them.
It also provides an easy way for Sky to tell us about increases to our subscription payments by slipping a letter in to a package we usually throw straight into the recycling.

    Exactly.

the billing of the magazine separately is a con by Sky to claw back money on their tax bill.

I very much doubt your friend saved £1.75 by cancelling the magazine as Sky have refuted this in the past. Wait until their next dd comes out......see if it's the same price as always.

I have cancelled it in the past. You do not get any discount on your subscriptions. As the magazine is a pile anyway I went ahead and cancelled it. Saves putting it in recycling.

VAT fiddle, as already pointed out. This is usually done by membership subscriptions too as they are subject to VAT and the magazine is not. Put a 'cover' price on the magazine and the company/organisation does not have to pay VAT on the magazine element.

I used to assit the VAT Accountant where I worked. Loads of little loopholes in the VAT legislation which companies take advantage if they are savvy and have a good Accountant who knows his VAT legislation.
