HD Question

Am in the process of getting sky multiroom and was just wondering about HD - does it work on all tvs or just newer ones - the tv in my bedroom is a 14" matsui one that I have had about8 years, wasnt sure whether it was worth holding out for HD or not, thought if it wont work on the tv then I wont bother:D

the other question...if we have sky + in the main room and then get multiroom - do we have to pay the extra £9.75 for multiroom per month then an additional £9.75 for the sky plus facility per room or is it per household? Thanks

  • Your 14" Matsui won't be HD ready. You need to look (mostly) at LCD or Plasmas with HD ready on them.

You don't pay twice for the multiroom Sky+.

thanks for that, didnt think it would be but thought would check:D

so really the cost difference is going to just be the box that we put in, so if we put two basic sky boxes in it would cost £49 for each of them, however at the moment there is an offer for getting the HD box for £49 - probably better going for this? is a phone line a must or anything?

was thinking of possibly upgrading my tv soon anyway

HD is only really noticeable above 20 inches plus so if you want HD in the future you are going to have to buy a new TV (preferably above 32 inches to get the full HD experience).

I believe that if you are subscribing to any Sky package you'll get Sky + for free in every room- if not I'd complain you'd be paying twenty quid per tv for Multiroom and Sky +, which is steep in my opinion.

If you went the Sky HD route you would be signing up to a 12 month contract at least for £26.50/month.
£16.50 for their basic package and £10/month for whatever HD channels fit in with your subscription.

Part of the contract is for you to connect the box to the phone line for 12 months, though you can pay a one of fee of around £25 if you don't have a line.

Edit - Just seen you've been thanked 894,038 times. Well done. :)

thanks for that, I have been looking into getting it sorted for a bit but have finally got the ball rolling so to speak today. Have got myself totally lost in amongst it at the moment:D

I wonder if I bought a couple of boxes would we then be able to book sky to come and fix up the multiroom to them? also if we had a total of 3 tvs with sky+ is that okay i.e. is there enought slots on the dish or wherever? also does a phone line have to be in each room?

sorry for all the questions but you are all being so helpful and I understand it better when people on here explain it than sky explaining it ont he phone:D

so really we are as well going for sky+ or just normal sky box?

  • Sky+ allows you to record, pause & rewind live TV. You can record one while watching another, or record 2 while watching a recording.

Sky+ is better, assuming you'll make use of the above.

Unless you are a movies/sports/wildlife documentary fan I wouldn't go for HD yet- the channels have increased in number but it's still ten pounds a month on top of your package. I'd wait until the HD fee is waived- likely 2012 when HD comes onto the Freeview platform.

thanks for your help guys, its been great and I think I will be speaking to sky tomorrow to sort out what is happening but it wont be HD me thinks

if I got a couple of sky+ boxes off ebay or amazon or somewhere would sky then install them for us or how would it work?

  • You need 2 cables going to each Sky+ box, so the LNB (the bit on the dish where the cables connect) must be a quad. I'm not sure what Sky would charge just for a standard install if you have the boxes already.
