One poster on a site near me includes a message at the bottom of her "Offers," which basically says a landline number must be included, "So I can ring you up and shout if you fail to turn up!" Admire this lady's attitude!
IMHO offering to 1st responder can almost be inviting no-shows, particularly when they realise how far away you are and the practicalities of collection / cost of petrol. Some folk just don't think things through before grabbing!
As far as manners go. I don't even bother writing "Polite responses only," or "No text speak please," as some posters do. People shouldn't need reminding, they should automatically apply good manners, ps & qs etc. However, these are the 1st to be rejected when I'm deciding who to offer to!
Just my opinion, works for me!Worse things will have happened in the world today..."The only thing that really matters, it to love and to be loved."0 -

Well I give up with freecycle. Bearing in mind the posts I have mentioned here in the past, I had a wanted ad rejected because I hadn't offered anything for 3 months and 2 weeks....
Had a snotty exchage with the "owner" of our group saying she would have reconsidered if I had just stated the facts when I emailed her to ask for it to be reconsidered but I lectured her, was rude and telling her how to run her group. Below the email I sent her...
Dear ***** and Mods, with respect, this is a joke surely?
The last thing I offered was in April 17th 3 months and 2 weeks ago, fair enough, but before that I offered 5 items since the start of the year A side board, directors chair, scuba tanks, orange fencing and a pair of stair gates (none of which are particularly small value items, I think you will agree). I have only made 2 requests in that entire time (7 months!!)(both in April) for a book and some paint and neither of those was granted! I have responded to a number of wanted adverts and have given away a load of shelving, plant pots and some fabric to people who posted wanted ads for them (OK you can't see that I did this but I did ) I have not asked for anything from anyones offered adverts either. In fact I can't remember the last time I picked something up.
I have not posted a shopping list of items that I absolutely must have or i'll die....ever. And I also have never tried to jam 6 wanteds into one advert like a lady did a few weeks ago "because I only have 1 wanted left for the month" and she had the advert approved!
I am frankly fed up with the double standards that seem to be in play in this group. How completely unfair can you be? I may not be the most active member but at least I use the group as it was intended and don't take the mickey like so many others.
I'm seriously disappointed that this has been treated in such a narrow minded manner considering some of the adverts that are approved which blatantly break the rules. I can give you examples if you like.
I hope you see fit to reconsider this decision.
Regards
Me
She replied saying that rules had to be obeyed so I replied that
I look forward to seeing the rules followed to the T as they should be.
Strangely she is very quiet now.

Yes sadly there are some mods out there that are clearly unsuited to the role and who don't exercise sound judgement or common sense.
I'm quite lucky my two main/nearest groups have pretty decent mods - two I have exchanges with have been great.Hate and I do mean Hate my apple Mac Computer - wish I'd never bought the thing

So I have posted 3/4 offereds over last couple of days and have had a reply from one person to two of the offereds the replies said EXACTLY;
I can collect
I can collect, where are you
Well no actually you can't collect - you may be capable of doing so , but I shan't be giving you the opportunity to do so.
It's amazing how far a please, thanks and general politeness can go. On the other hand lack of these will get you nowhere with me.
Conversely I had a reply from some one who was so polite, friendly n nice - I wished I hadn't already told someone else they could have the stuff - ah well c'est la vieHate and I do mean Hate my apple Mac Computer - wish I'd never bought the thing

I'm in the Glasgow Freecycle Group and frankly I am about to give up .I have offered a few items recently and the problems are people not reading what I say about insisting on a contact tel number when I have offered the item to the first to respond ...PLUS...folk failing to either get back to me with a date/time to collect so I know that if I am not in I can safely leave it on the landing for them to collect OR not turning up at all.
It's hardly worth the bother ..I am getting really peed off ...so if I continue to get rid of stuff I want rid of to make space it is either going to the dump or if it is a reasonable item it is either going on Ebay or to a charity shop .0
