Sky Broadband - Why so slow?

Penryn posted 2 minutes too late

You'd just posted the correct info...probably while he/she was typing
Anyway....Dazamc...
I can't find my bookmark of adsl2+ estimates...but...48 Db is quite a high attenuation..suggesting a fairly long line so you're never gonna hit full speed...but the 17.4dbv SNR is way off the mark, suggesting serious noise issues. Hopefull the noise issues are resolved now you are connected to the correct socket using a filter, and the rate can decrease over the next week or 2
As to connecting your xbox...erm...I dunno...3 choices I can think of
1. Get a wireless xbox connector thing (assuming they make them)
2. Run a Cat5e cable between the modem, in it's current position downstairs next to the socket, to the xbox upstairs...maybe follow the same cabling route as the current, and very poor, phone extension cable. Cat5 is Very, Very cheap...getting a length made up in a local PC shop shouldn't be more than a few quid - This is my prefered suggestion!
3. Put the modem back where it was and return to the noisy bad lineUtinam logica falsa tuam philosophiam totam suffodiant.0 -
Next time I'll not delay by looking for a pretty picture.
With your line attenuation of 48db, you should be syncing at between 6 - 7 mbps.
The fact that your noise margin is high at 17db suggests either a noisy line or you have been capped by Sky, probably as a result of them trying to get your connection stable when you were using your extension.
If you sort out your extension wiring per my previous post then you can put your modem back where it was. That gum you like is coming back in style.0 -
OK I've checked the extension wiring and it's ok - only wires 2 and 5 are connected so it's nothing to do with that.
So should I wait a week or 2 and do the test again, to see if the noise has been reduced and the speed has gone up? And if it hasn't , ring sky and ask why it's been capped??0 -

Not necessarily! Proper telephone cable is a twisted pair and one of the pairs in the cable needs to be connected to 2 & 5. Sometimes burglar alarm cable is used and this is not twisted pair telephone cable.
You gained a significant speed increase when plugged into your master socket, so the extension wiring seems a bit iffy to me! Blue text on this forum usually signifies hyperlinks, so click on them!..:wall:0 -

It's up to 4288 now! So hopefully will increase even more
If not I'll ring sky. And the noise seems to have gone down too :
ADSL Link Downstream Upstream Connection Speed 4288 kbps 416 kbps Line Attenuation 48.0 db 30.5 db Noise Margin 12.4 db 14.0 db0 -
as the noise margin decreases the sync will increase...not too sure where you're gonna end up but at 12db you still have a couple of steps down to the 6db standard

If possible - unplug/replug your router around lunchtime tomorrow...Utinam logica falsa tuam philosophiam totam suffodiant.0 -
The speed is only 3456 kbps today

The noise is also higher -
Noise Margin 18.6 db 13.0 db
Very strange.0 -
this is plugged, via a filter, directly into the master socket?
can you try another filter (most modems come with at least 2)
you could try the test socket (discovered by removing the 2 screws on the master socket and removing the faceplate)...another..unlikely possibility is an underground joint allowing a bit of water in (raining here)Utinam logica falsa tuam philosophiam totam suffodiant.0 -

It's raining here too so that's a possibility. Here is how I have everything connected: From the master socket I have a 3 way adapter - plugged into that I have the sky tv cable and the filter cable, then through the filter I have the phone cable and the modem cable - through a short 1m cable (I think) into the wireless modem. I did have the phone cable in the 3 way adapter instead of the filter which probably lost some speed. I'm gonna try another filter and will post the results . It's up to 3648 kbps now I've plugged the phone cable in the filter0 -
Have you any other hardwired extensions?
Try doing what DBerror suggests and try connecting to the test socket, as shown below:-
Its also possible that Sky are running DLM (Dynamic Line Management) on your line which is why the connection speed is changing.

I've just re read the post of how you have your phones wired. It is not correct.
You should connect your ADSL filter directly to the master socket, the modem is then connected to the ADSL port, all your other devices, phone Sky box should be connected to the Telephone port on the filter.
If you have other extensions these also require a filter. That gum you like is coming back in style.0
