Does anyone else have a view on the quality of calls? Is it really unusable?0 -
I had a couple of skypephone handsets for a few months for myself & my OH....the call quality when it worked was terrible we dumped the handsets & went to asda mobile after that....wouldnt try again though & now the calls are free to skype I imagine the quality will be a whole lot worse...We all die. The goal isn't to live forever, the goal is to create something that will0

I have just started using Skype on my mobile after having used it on my computer at home for the last couple of years. I had read on a couple of other sites how bad the mobile version of Skype on three was supposed to be, but so far I have no major complaints.
First of all I have the Sony Ericsson w595 handset - nothing special and one that 3 seem to want to flog, but I assume it's a mediocre phone in regards to using Skype. I have downloaded the latest Skype for 3 software (v 2.0.52). It might also be worth pointing out that I live in London where reception is good.
The application is easily accessible on the handset, it does however seem to freeze for a minute or two when accessing it at times. I assume it is the limitation of RAM or possibly that it tries to reconnect to the network (I lose signal when moving through the building at work).
A couple of times it's not been capable of finding the connection but I think it once again is because I've just come into range of the 3G network, so it has not yet locked on. Redialling after waiting for a minute has sorted that problem out.
Voice quality during calls is good. I have no complaints about that whatsoever. The only annoyance is that there is a slight delay form you speaking until you get the reply - you'll juse have to wait a second or so before getting a reply to what you've just said, but you quickly get used to it. If I remeber it correctly I had that problem witrh Skype when I first started using it (my computer wasn't the best either so...)
Entering the chat mode can also take a minute or two, but once there there are no problems.
Overall I am very happy with it and see it as a welcome addition that my phone doubles up as a skype phone. It's also good able to be online most of the time - now I can pop to the pub rather than sit home waiting for people to wake up and get online. Not very MSE, but still... If I'd be at home I'd use my normal Skype tho. I don't have that voice delay and controlling the application is easier with the mouse...
It would be interesting to hear what people with other phones have to say about it as I have a feeling the phones have as much to do with it as anything else...0 -
I bought the Skyphone precisely for this purpose - and the only caveat is that if data traffic is heavy (peak hours) Skype calls are awful.
DO REMEMBER this is only for SKype calls from 3 PHONES - using a BB dongle isn't free and will come out your data allowance.0 -
if ive read this thread and 3 skype info pages corectly....
my eldest is going to work in Europe during the summer (currently at university)
am i right in thinking that as she is a 3 customer and seems to have one of the correct models of phone to use skype.
will the calls from me in the uk via pc to her mobile somewhere in europe cost anything?
whereas if she calls us from her mobile using skype the calls are free?smile --- it makes people wonder what you are up to....

Did your phone come from Three mobile? If not you'll have to wait a few weeks until they update it to allow any compatible phone to use it (with a three sim card)
If it came from three just follow the instructions on three.co.uk/skype although no HTC phones are listed as compatible.will the calls from me in the uk via pc to her mobile somewhere in europe cost anything?

I was under the impression that it only worked in Britain. You can call a skype user in another country for free but if you took a Three phone abroad it was no longer free to make or receive calls.
Have a look again. You might find it will still be pretty cheap compared to making a normal call even if it's not free. If she won't have access to a PC with skype on when she's away have a look at this vodafone roaming offer.0
