Both my daughters had this injection after having perfectly normal periods ever since they started menstruating.

Our older daughter came off it when she got married and a couple of years down the line was told she had developed PCOS. It has taken her 6 years to become pregnant and DH and I now have a gorgeous little Grandson :D

Our younger daughter came off the Depo nearly two years ago and has been told recently that she also has developed PCOS (there was never any sign of this before with either of them). She is worried about how long it may take her to become pregnant, though thankfully, she is only 25 and so has plenty of time.

Neither of my DDs would recommend the Depo injection to anyone. Since it hasn't been in use for very many years, my worry is does anyone (doctors included) really know what the long-term effects are?

my daughter had one injection of depo, she also developed pcos after coming off it and there was no sign of it before, she has been trying now for nearly 14 years for another baby following the birth of my grandson, also fertility treatment has not helped

I had hell on the Depo - huge weight gain, spots, mood swings and awful headaches, stuck with it for 9 months as dr assured me it would get better.
After coming off it, my periods were awful for a year, really erratic, sometimes bleeding for 20 days out of 30! I have never had a problem before.

Took me 18 mnths to concieve after coming off Depo. Since then i have been fine thankfully and had the non hormonal coil, which was far better for me.
I would never recommend Dep to anyone at all, im not alone in my group of friends in having horror stories of it.
  • Hi

I always suggest to patients that it can take from 18 months to 2 years for fertility to get back to 'normal' after being on the depot injection before they have agree to have it. It is becoming a less popular form of contraception than some of the other methods available where menstrual cycle returns much quicker.

A few women have no problem but I see a lot of women who unfortunately have not been advised of this before using it and who then struggle to get pregnant after stopping it.

I totally hated the DEPO. I put on lots of weight -which I am prone too with things like the pill. After coming off the depo I didn't have a period for over a year and it took me 2 years to concieve. I totally regret using the depo. I also know someone who got pregnant on the depo. I personally would look for another form of contraception. Especially if you are affected by your hormones - I hated being on the depo.

    Totally personal opinion of course.

  • I was advised by the family planning nurse that it would take up to a year as I was on it for 8 years and over 30, because of her advice I came off depo early and began trying for a baby for next year. I had 2 periods and fell pregnant after 3 months. I would says there's no set rules and I would go back on it and plan the next pregnancy instead of coming off early.

I too gained a large amount of weight which has proven VERY hard to shift. I came off it about 18/24 months before we were wanting to try to get pregnant though... but that was co-incidence rather than planning - I started ballooning again (been on it twice...). If you gain more than 7lb in 3 months they should take you off it regardless. I gained more than that in 3 months so was taken off it. There are in my view better options out there than Depo which won't potentially effect you for as long as the Depo could... Yes if it agrees with your system it's a great solution - but the chances of it having weight gain effects or causing a significant delay in getting pregnant coming off it in my mind makes it a last resort solution instead of a first choice.

It took me 5 months to get pregnant after stopping the depo injection, I did like the injection and it suited me but I felt dreadful when I stopped taking it, infact I thought I was pregnant about a month after the injection had ran out as I had morning sickness and my hormones just felt like they were all over the place

Sorry to bump this thread, but I've read it before and now wanted to update with my experiences.

I was on depo for 8 years and it was absolutely great for me. I tried various pills, but had breakthrough bleeding on all. I went onto depo and never looked back.

I've read various threads about the problems people have TTC after depo, so DH and I made and active decision to stop soon after our wedding last October. We hoped to start TTC later this year.

I had my last depo injection in September 2008 (so it wore off in December 2008). My periods started back in March 2009, but were light, only 2-3 days long and with only 14 days in between. I had my first 'proper' period in June 2009 and had another 30 days later.

My latest period was due on Thursday. It didn't arrive... so I tested this morning and a BFP!! :j

So - all in all it took me 7 months to conceive from the date the depo wore off.

I know depo receives some bad press on many forums, but it has been absolutely great for me. Thought I'd post a 'good news story' as I don't think as many people log on and post if they've had no problems TTC.
