Argh, I might kill him. He's accepted an invitation, on behalf of both of us, to a workmate's summer garden party - an entire day, in a garden, miles from the hospital, two weeks before my EDD.

And he seems not to understand beyond the possibility that I might be less than mobile at that stage, that 30+ degree weather, having to find something to wear that is decent and still fits, and being miles and miles from where I would need to be in case anything happened (and without transport; we'd have to take a train) is not something I want to commit to.

It's just as well I love him. If I didn't I'd smother him in his sleep and pretend the cat did it.

Right, I'm taking my cankles to bed. It's been hours since I said cankles. They're sore. Hmph.

Someone paid to be a birthing partner I think!

Yep. That's it. A doula is someone who you pay to be with you during hte labour and birth, and they usually provide ante natal and postnatal visits too, to help you get the birth you want, support you emotionally, help fight decisions on your behalf should it become necessary, and some even do housework and meals for you too.

I decided to get one because my OH hasn;t read a thing about the natural birth processes I want, and I don't have a lot of faith in my midwife and she may not be the one I get on the day anyway.

I want someone there who understands what I want and why, who will help me achieve it, and who will support both me and my OH emotionally through the labour and birth.

They usually do some training with people like Doula UK, and the one I'm seeing tomorrow has also trained as a MW (well, she did six months of the three years' training before becoming pregnant and stopping).

It's really so that I have someone to ensure that my wishes are followed and who I know and trust, because I cannot rely on my MW sadly and in fact am considering reporting her for being quite pants.

I'd have loved an independent MW but can't really justify the cost, whereas a doula is cheaper and therefore a good compromise.

It's more the whole 'active birth, completely natural third stage, no pain relief' kind of thing, and as I want to refuse the drugs to speed up the delivery of the placenta, I just want someone who can ensure I'm not overridden on the day, as well as someone who can help me breathe my way through it and generally be calm, as OH is likely to be no use at all!

But yes, also the lotus thing (if I decide to do it, the jury is still out) as so far I haven;t mentioned that to the MW!
