That seems a long time for a decision - was it for Incapacity Benefit or DLA? I realise that they cant give a decision there and then but they do have to say a long time to cover themselves

  • Incapacity Benefit also the doctor would not let the women from the mental helath advocate take any notes he gave her a letter first
  • well just got back from the medical glad i took somebody with me from the mental health advocate as i was really stressed out it was a australian doctor he must have asked a thousand questions when i was so worked up he asked me who was the primeministy i had a mental block i could not think for the life of me what the anser was he then said what is 7 from 93 i could not think for the life of me then 5 minites later i started counting down from 93 on my finger and gave him the anser
These are two of the standard tests for dementia. Early onset dementia can affect adults below retirement age. Don't worry, he was just covering all his bases and making sure he wasn't missing anything, and your answers certainly gave a good indication of the level of anxiety you experience.
I hope everything goes well for you, and of course you can appeal if the decision goes against you. I'm sure the mental health advocate was a great source of support for you, but I'm puzzled they weren't allowed to take notes. I'd be very grateful if you could tell us if the doctor give a reason for this?
    Good luck
  • does that mean i have Early onset dementia or is that anxiety you have me worried now

I'm so sorry - no it certainly doesn't and I truly didn't mean you to be worried, I was trying to be helpful by explaining the doctors questions but I'm afraid it's backfired on me.
Stress and anxiety also can cause us to not be able to remember quite simple things sometimes, and also not be able to do simple arithmetic. Please don't worry - your doctor would have picked it up by now if you were showing early signs. Best wishes.
  • thanks to everyone that helped me

    Hi Blue Angel,

Have been following your post and just wanted to say that my sister went through something similar to you but she has just received her confirmation letter stating that she has met the "threshold" requirements and that her Incapacity Benefit will continue to be paid. This took approx 3 weeks from the medical and her doctor at the medical also advised her that it could take several months to be notified so hopefully you will have your letter soon too. Please try not to worry about the outcome as by the sound of things the doctor asked you questions which highlighted your difficulties perfectly and this should most certainly work in your favour. You did the right thing posting on this forum, the people here are absolutely wonderful and very supportive :T .
Please let us know how you get on and best wishes to you.
