Home-owners have become locked in uncompetitive SVRs due to unexpected falls in equity and equally unexpected changes in the mortgage market. Lenders are taking advantage of this to increase their profit margins beyond all magnitude for the extra default risk.
Banks are doing this to recoup loses on fixed and tracker deals that it turns out under priced the risk. Why should one group of mortgage holders pay for the erroneous risk decisions taken by the banks on all mortgage holders?
The amounts involved are much higher than the bank charges, easily £2k per 100k borrowed per year.I think....0 -
If inflation is 5% and interest rates are 6% the real return is 1%, the other 5% should be added on to the capital to maintain its value in real terms. However all 6% is taxable thus the real return may be negative after 20% tax is deducted. Compare the situation with inflation at 0% and interest at 1%. The monetary value of the interest is much lower so the tax payable will be much less. Why should savers be worse off during periods of inflation?I think....0

Ryanair are much worse overall - priced up flights for 4 people recently - £0.02 flights would only cost £330 all in!!!
£4 per person per leg credit card charge when they pay the credit card company probably 1% or less - so about 50p on a 50 quid ticket so an 800% mark up - is there the same mark up on all their other so called 'taxes and charges'?Airlines must put all their charges into the prices quoted and not add on any extras - despite existing legislation, easyjet still cheats & automatically adds on extra charges eg for suitcases, and insurance, which have to be manually removed - if you spot them.I think....0 -
Introduce 20% Capital Gains Tax on the profits from sales of private housing. Big anomaly in the tax system should be closed to fill the treasuries coffers and stop the next hpi bubble before it begins.0

Restore married couples' income tax allowance.Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.0

Ban wheel clamping (and the associated 'legal extortion') on private land (as has already been done in Scotland).Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. It is ridiculously bureaucratic for Winter Fuel Allowance to be paid separately each winter when the £250 could simply be paid (at £5 per week) as part of an increased State Pension.Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Let house prices collapse, people can spend on building the real economy.0

We know the country will be up to its neck in debt for many, many years to come (perhaps for more than a generation) but, still, Gordon Brown hands out millions in 'aid' whenever he goes overseas. When will our politicians realise that countries which spend millions developing nuclear weapons don't need 'aid'?Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.0
