Family are great for this!
Me and OH have nothing brand new (well not when he first moved in). We pick a different thing to save for and then replace it
His first thing was a TV (men eh?), and our latest thing has been plates. Lol.
Now we've recently got engaged we cannot wait to get nice new things!!!!
2 things that stick out are that we have never bought a sofa, or a bed. We just blag his mums cast offs
But we are decorating our front room this summer and am going to buy our first sofa!!!!!! lol Green and White Barmy Army!0 -

Yes you can get some fantastic items from freecycle! Id say you could furnish your new place for practically nothing as long as you have a van.Ask for what you need and Just mention you need everything for your new place, and im sure people will help you. Ive seen it done a few times before, worth a try!0 -

It feels good not splashing out and getting into debt, and even better when you save up and buy the new things cash!:D0 -
Lets see, 7 years ago setting up home with DH (or DF at that point).
Cooker, freezer, our bedroom furniture - came with house.
Fridge, washing machine - second hand (WM is still going!)
Bed - already had (but I'd just buy a new mattress if I could get a second hand frame)
Sofas - BIG gift from in laws
Hoover, plates, cutlery etc - gifts
We were very lucky that we didn't have to buy much. We accumulated most of it as gifts and second hand things from friends/family.
You replace and repair as you go along.
(I almost bought a wardrobe and 2 chest of drawers form a charity shop yesterday to replace the now falling to bits bedroom furniture in our room, all that held me back was that we are saving for our holiday)0 -

We will need to buy new furniture as we dont own any.
But what sort of things should i NOT buy second hand? Or is it ok to buy everything second hand?
Its all we can afford at the moment.

If you get an IKEA mattress bear in mind they are a specific size and won't fit most other beds0

Put the word out in your places of work that you are moving and are looking for furniture. We were amazed at how much stuff was given to us - 3 piece suite, sofa bed dining table and chairs, fridge etc that people were going to get rid off. Now we are in a better position it is nice to rehome our things with someone in need of them rather than chucking them.0
