Me and OH have decided to move out into a new house within the next two months. We're currently renting my uncles flat off of him, and we want somewhere bigger.

We will need to buy new furniture as we dont own any.
But what sort of things should i NOT buy second hand? Or is it ok to buy everything second hand?
Its all we can afford at the moment.

There's nothingwong with second hand! It's all I had when I first left home... Don't think there's anything you should especially avoid... You might want to buy your own mattress... But there's nothing wrong with a 2nd hand one if you're comfortable with it...A very proud Mummy to 3 beautiful girls... Yeah, im ok with having everything second hand. The fridge i have at the moment was given to me by my stepmums mum. So i'll have that to take with me

I think Oh wants a big tv though lol x0 -
Get on Freecycle EA. It's incredible what people give away on there. Only thing is you need to be able to collect but most things will fit in a large car. We gave away two sofas a while ago. Both in great condition, and both collected in not very big cars!:DYummy mummy, runner, baker and procrastinator

You may like to check out getting good quality second hand or lesser quality new. You will be hard pressed to find eg sheets cheaper second hand than Matalan/Argos/Primark new. However if you lust after cotton sheets (and this has been known) it is worth perhaps looking out on ebay for second hand/seconds.
A value kettle will give good service for some time, as will a value iron. You may be able to get a better quality iron or kettle second hand.
Personally, I would buy bedding and towels new as inexpensively as possible, everything else second hand unless you can buy it cheaper new (and worth checking, seriously).
Charity shops can often be more expensive than new so look out. Car boot, especially towards the end of the time, may be more cost effective.
Also, if you say to friends that you are trying to get stuff together, you will be surprised at how much is donated. Say thank you and pass the kindness on when you can.
Congratulations and good luck in your new home.Ankh Morpork Sunshine Sanctuary for Sick Dragons - don't let my flame go out!0 -
I think the only thing I wouldn't get second hand is a mattress, and sheets and towels I would prefer cheap Asda ones that hadn't been used.. but that's just me being fussy.
be careful not to spend too much on a washing machine or hoover, as sometimes it seems they are not built to last to begin with.0 -
Hi hun
If u have an IKEA near you try the bargain corner. It's usually display items or things people have returned - if u don't mind the odd dent or chip you can get some good deals.
I got a black 2 seater leather sofa which was £350 down to £150 all because the leather on the seat was all loose and baggy - that was 4 years ago and it's still going strong in our conservatory.
Could u not use OH's email address for freecycle or set yourself up with another account?
At my local car boot there is always people who do house clearances selling things - some of it is tat but you can get some good stuff.A very busy Yummy Mummy to a 1 year old gorgeous boy :smileyhea

Must just be the Wednesbury Ikea that has a crappy bargain corner then! Nothing is ever particularly reduced... And it's usually battered to death... Apart from the little Poang chair I got for DD... £15 instead of £25... But there was nothing wrong with it...A very proud Mummy to 3 beautiful girls... OH wants a new mattress me thinks, our current bed is a waterbed, so any mattress i buy will be rubbish compared to the waterbed lol. My uncle bought the waterbed for £600
