I can't compare different cloning applications because I've only ever used one, Clone Genius, which is excellent. One that has been recommended is Ghost.
When I replaced the 80GB drive in my laptop with a 160GB drive, having produced the Clone Genius Boot Disc, the process took about 45 minutes and the new drive worked perfectly first time.
The download is free and the release code is sent to your mobile and costs whatever a premium text costs on your system - I think mine was £1.50 or so!

Acronis True Image for me is the best, it's excellent for various types of backups and excellent for imaging. Pretty cheap too, but not free, there are some other freebie applications, including a free version of Acronis for Seagate and Maxtor drives, I think it's available from Seagate's website...0

The older versions of ghost were excellent but itis now filled with bloatware. Acronis is good and a lot of people swear by Clonezilla (http://clonezilla.org/) although I've never tried it myself.0

I should have said that id prefer software thats free or as cheap as possible0

Acronis TrueImage is the one I use too - it seems to be able to create the images very quickly, is easy-to-use, and never caused me any problems. I think (from memory) it's version 9 I have - I think they're up to v11 now.0

Agree about Acronis via Seagate.
I've also used the following several times with no problems, it looks basic, it is a bit slow but it's FREE.
Besides creating images, it will also copy partitions between drives.

IIRC the ultimate boot CD, (UBCD), has various programs on for paritioning and then copying partitions, including 'clonezilla'. Also, in the past, I've used GParted to create a new partition on my new, (larger), drive of the same size as the old drive, copied it across ansd then resized it.
This is all free software.

Download it and write to CD using ISO image write. Check your CD writing software for details of how to do this.0
