The scheme will not run till March next year I believe; I think the money will run out well before that. Lead times on small cars are getting silly; I read on a website of someone who ordered the new Ka in jan and hasn't got it yet. An interesting question is this - if you order a car with a fair old lead time, and the goverment money runs out before your car is delivered (the dealers can only claim the money off the government in arrears), what is going to happen, are the dealers going to ask for the extra 2k? Who knows!

Don't think it will run out. There will be a mad dash for very cheap cars then I think demand will drop right off. It's only really a good deal against a few cars; Mini's, Fiat 500 Hyundai i10's etc cars that wouldn't have been discounted much prior to the scheme. For bigger more expensive vehicles you are still better off getting a pre-registered car and not using the scrappage scheme.

Agree entirely. Unlike the European scheme which is much more generous and flexible the UK one will ultimately have limited appeal after the mad dash for i10's and the elusive Picantos has subsided.

picking up my i10 next weekend, it's a family owned dealership that has ordered lots of es, so no 3-4 month wait.
I'm very happy with the car we're getting, the way the wife drives i don't think engine size or belt/chain issues matter.

i would think that too. The scheme thus far has done what it achieved to do. Increased sales. I know of one local dealership that has sold more cars in the past 2 wks, than they have in the last year

I too know that many of my local dealers have been "selling" 20+ cars a week (although they can only "confirm interest" until May 18th...), particularly at the cheaper end. My local Hyundai dealer isn't selling anything apart from i10s, i20s and the odd i30; not surprising when the discount comes in at nearly 30% off list; pretty good even if the list prices are inflated and no-one pays them anyway.

But as to the money "running out": the government has put in £300million into the scheme; that means 300,000 lots of £1000: and I don't think that there will be that much demand!

I agree with other posters that it is more likely that there will be an initial surge of interest, and then, once everyone has got their orders in, there will be a lull. But look out for car makers making a big advertising splash in Jan-Mar next year announcing that there is still money left and the scrappage scheme is about to expire.

The dealers only get a few hundred quid for selling the really cheap cars; but, as my Hyundai dealer said to me: "we're not exactly having to work hard to make the sales; and a few hundred quid times 30 cars is well worth having". So they seem fairly happy. Also, it puts new cars on the road, which will all need servicing, etc.....

I am still happy with the scheme; but I accept that I am bang in the market; certainly to see someone scrapping a lovely S-reg Ford Focus because it was now "worth" £2000 was a great shame: 6 months ago we would probably have bitten each other's arms off if I had offered him £800......

Ordered a i30, told that the Scrappage vehicle must now be taxed at time of exchange as well as MOT'd,this means that we would lose out £50 refund. Anyone else discovered this, no one can refund the tax as it can only be refunded to the owner!

    From the telegraph yesterday
Furthermore, the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders, which represents makers and their dealers, initially stated that in order to qualify for the scrappage scheme such vehicles need to be taxed and insured, too. However, following calls from Telegraph Motoring, the SMMT decided this week that neither insurance nor a current tax disc is needed. If in doubt, check with your dealer

I've got to go to the dealers later to hand over the mot & log book, so I'll double check then.
I've only just noticed, since Jan 09, dealers can't claim tax back anymore.

    UPDATE:

Asked the dealer & they're not sure! Going to find out for me next week. Can't see the telegraph being incorrect though.
    Next year we'll be millionaires!

the last registered owner of the vehicle is allowed to claim for the refund, so you havent lost £50. Its just motor traders who cant

I think the info on having an MOT and tax at the time of pick-up rather than order, seems to vary between manufacturers. I know fiat are saying that you have to have both at collection, rather than order

My local hyundai dealer had over 40 orders last week on scrappage scheme. Thats more than they normally sell in a quarter

Just a shame theres no money in it for the dealer, so it hasnt really helped them

The car must have tax OR a sorn - so you could do that?

The Peugeot dealers are currently offering up to £2300 off models, add the £1000 government scrappage and then part exchange - Im looking at nearly £5k off a high spec 207. (about a third off MRRP).

The 107 has £1k off plus £2k scrappage - £3k off means the car is only about £6k?
