I've read all the stuff about chip and pin with interest. In the past two days I have been told in Safeway, Asda and Currys, by the person on the till, that from Jan. they would not be accepting cards that don't have a chip and pin. I phoned my credit card company and they state that by law the stores have to accept the unchipped cards and that they have been in close contact with the stores to inform them of the changes...........try telling that to the people on the tills who will be refusing cards come January! Lots of red faces in the new year. :-[
  • In relation to Halifax visa debit cards with chips embedded, Halifax have told me that at present they are chip & signature, just to add confusion they also have issue numbers which are only valid on switch cards so go figure :o

Retailers cannot refuse a card either because it is or because it is not Chip & PIN. The shift of liability should encourage retailers to get the terminals sooner rather than later.

When the card is inserted into a chip reader, the machine detects whether the card has a PIN or not.

I believe that some people on the tills may be misunderstanding the situation. If the card is not Chip & PIN enabled, they will still be accepted. The only thing that these shops will stop from 1st January will be letting someone sign for a transaction when the card they are using is Chip & PIN enabled. If the card does not have a PIN (though it may have a chip), you will still be able to sign for transactions in the normal way.
