I might place nice things strategically; a pair of expensive shoes by my dressing table, a bottle of champagne next to the wine rack or pretend I've spent the afternoon reading, drinking cold wine in the garden (instead of running around like a loon until the doorbell rings) sort of thing but I don't lay the table - it really does look like it wasn't an accident.

Ikea = aspirational. Are we sure?

You don't have to paint your lounge if you don't want to - you'll be lucky as well if you get honest feedback from your friends :o Our bedroom was terracotta when we bought this house. It just goes on the mental "change" list. Friends bought a house with terracotta on the kitchen walls and it looked lovely so it's really a matter or taste or how dated something might look.

Is it supposed to look like an accident?

I agree with others... re-paint the walls if you can...

I could see past Terracotta (infact our last house had one wall of the living room terracotta - sounds odd, but added some warmth to the room), BUT we did redecorate before selling it... although, in the end, we sold to the neighbours (who were knocking through), so I doubt they would have minded... :o

Terracotta is one of those colours that people tend to either love or hate and regardless it can make a room seem a lot darker and smaller. I don't think it is worth risking offending the "we hate it crowd". Especially in this market - you want EVERY viewer to say "we love it!".

Table is less of an issue - think that you have to be a real "ham brain" to discount a house because you don't like the state of the furniture (but people do!). Agree that a table cloth makes a great suggestion :)

    Good luck

I like things not to look entirely contrived. Perhaps like they could be, but then there is the possibility that I might actually live that way. Laying the table seems a bit odd. I don't know anyone that does it, except showhomes. Appreciate that it may also promote the lifestyle but I wouldn't be able to keep a straight face!

If the table was laid in my house, it really would be an accident!

I nearly set fire to the house once. There was a small incident directly before a viewing involving a candle and some ornamental flowers. Because the house was on a main road I wouldn't open the windows! House didn't sell to the people I nearly choked, but did half an hour later. :o

Sounds like some of my friends... One particularly memorable occassion, we had a couple of friends around for dinner (my husband went to university with the woman, the man had been her partner for the past 13/14 years... like them a lot, but he is a bit of a style snob - likes his art, his sculpture, his antiques etc... he is always fairly quick to give his opinion... ). Anyway I bring pudding out and we had some fresh red berries which I served in a (well I thought) nice cut glass bowl. The man pipes in how much of a 70s cliche the cut glass bowl is (and not in a very complimentary way!). So I get the pleasure of telling him that it is what they bought us for a wedding present about 7 years previous. Female friend adds "yes dear, we did". :D :rotfl:

..and the reason the showhomes do it is to suggest/promote the lifestyle, and to make it easy for the prospect to visualise the lifestyle for themselves......

Are you following me? ! Why did you take out my comment about it promoting a lifestyle to then tell me the same? I think I've explained my stance already. I've even stated how I prefer to promote a lifestyle.

I don't get all my best crockery out and lay it all piled up ready for starter, main course, dessert, water and wine unless it's Christmas or a proper dinner party because I know that viewers will absolutely know that it's contrived and that I'm making too much of an effort. I'd rather contrive things in a more subtle fashion. It's feasible to believe that all my towels match and I fold them that way normally and use designer smellies or that my fruit bowl always looks that colourful. Or that I haven't hidden a crap Vauxhall Astra round the corner! I've even had two friends round on a saturday afternoon drinking cocktails in the garden on a beautiful afternoon and purposely didn't cancel any viewings. That worked to spectacular effect but they were there anyway!

There's loads and loads that I do but I don't lay the table! If you saw my house now you wouldn't believe me. There's an orange merging into a black banana in my fruitbowl.
