Price is a major factor. Blurays will be around a while yet

GE are claiming a cost of 10¢ per gigabyte for blank media upon release, so that's $50 (£35) for a 500 GB disk. Not bad really, and a lot cheaper than Blu-Ray was when it was initially released.

I have the Alien Quadrilogy, which comes on nine DVDs. You could fit the whole box set in HD on one of those disks.

It'll be a few years before it makes it into the living room though; it's intended for archival storage, so will find use in libraries and movie studios first.

well considering RED just demoed a 4K at bandwidth a10 meg line could stream I think the internet just killed blue ray.

4k is a bit more than 4x1080p and more than a lot of cinemas, if they can push 4096×2160 with a codec av geeks cant tell the difference from film then people will just get a subscription and use 3meg to stream 1080p.

I think that's some way off. ISPs find it hard to cope with BBC iPlayer traffic, never mind everyone streaming HD content.

The problem with that sort of distribution is that you put it in someone else's hands. The internet, in the UK at least, won't be in good enough shape for that sort of thing for years. Movie houses might push online streaming as a compliment to the sale of physical media, but they won't replace it as the majority of their customers don't have the means to access it.

Remember the days of 28k modems was only about 12 years ago, you can get a 50meg line for less than many could have dreamed back then.

Fact is isp's have been cheaping out recently because the 1st round of the internet got good enough, the second round is coming an this time its about real time video so they can invest or lose customers.

The UK is really lagging behind other developed countries when it comes to internet speeds. In South Korea, 69% of internet connections are faster than 5 Mbps. Our high speed internet would be like dial-up to someone from Japan.

Still, the government are hard at work, and in 3 years, we'll all have access to 2 Mbps internet. :j
