BT privacy at home query

Hi there

I am on bt option 1 weekend plan , with calls through primus.

i rung up to have this added to my package ( i pay quarterly) , i was told for it to remain free i had to make 6 chargeable calls per quarter.

i was under the impression i could dial 1280 and make 6 free calls at the weekend, and caller display remain free ?

    Correct...................
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.

    Hi Heinz

Many thanks for your help, although i am a little confused, i have just had a look at the privacy at home t and c , and it says " customers who do not make some chargeable calls with BT will be charged for BT call display"

Do BT class free calls at weekend to landlines as chargeable ?

    many thanks

Inclusive calls count too - see HERE.

I don't believe this is true any more.

Just talked to Customer Services because I was considering moving to the Anytime plan. Under this plan, I believe all my calls would be inclusive and not chargeable, so I wanted to check what the position was with regard Caller Display (which, incidentally has recently rocketed up in price to £2.50 per month). The lady admitted that if all my calls were inclusive ones, then I WOULD be charged for Caller Display! Essentially, unless I go out of my way to call a mobile or something, then I'm gonna get hit for the Caller Display charge.

I think it's misleading advertising this product at £4.95 per month, when in fact it will end up costing £7.45 a month for many / most people. It's also very poor that the information about the Caller Display charge is significantly less prominent than it merits. With the increasing prevalence of of inclusive packages, this must be hitting more and more people and becoming a real money-spinner for BT.

Unfortunately, BT's advisers do not always give the correct information. I use my inclusive weekend calls to 'qualify' for free Caller Display - and have never had to pay.

I hope BT Company Representative will be along shortly to confirm what it says on BT's website - that chargeable OR inclusive calls count.

Think about it, it would be ridiculous for BT to require someone like you on their top package - the Unlimited Anytime Plan (on which all calls are inclusive) - to pay for Caller Display.

I've heard it from 2 different BT advisers now. I called BT on another matter to dispute the fact that my Caller Display fee had been charged at the increased price despite the majority of my bill covering the period before the price rose. I mentioned the query then, and the chap said the same, i.e., that I would be charged for Caller Display in the situation stated.

I'm happy to hear that reality is probably fairer, but I do wish the staff would get it right.

It's also not at all clear how to qualify to get it free. BT's site says (on the most prominent page you find when you are looking for this information, which is not actually very prominent at all!) that the calls have to be chargeable, although there seem to be smaller-print and more difficult-to-find pages which contradict this. You are managing it using inclusive calls. It all seems a bit of a mess.

Ridiculous it may be, but that wouldn't stop BT from doing it. The fact that my bill this quarter is 18% higher than the previous quarter in a deflationary economy, even though it is for precisely the same service - is also ridiculous.

    Hi Stonk!

I have read your queries about free Caller Display and wanted to clear up any confusion here.
To avail of free Caller Display at least two calls per month on monthly billing or six calls per quarter must be made.
The calls are either chargeable or those that would be made as part of an inclusive calls package
If you route your calls through another provider you will need to make chargeable calls via a BT Chargecard

With the Unlimited Anytime Plan the first hour of all local and national calls made from your line, 24/7, are free .It is most unlikely that anyone on this plan would be routing calls through another company. Therefore six inclusive calls per quarter will qualify for the free Caller Display

    Cheers

Many thanks for that. It certainly does settle the question. The wording on the website could be improved, though.

I'm not sure that I would have to use a Chargecard. Could I not simply prefix with 1280? I realise this doesn't work with certain other providers, but it does appear to work for me: some 1280 calls I made yesterday have appeared in my BT Recent Calls list, with non-zero costs. That should count as a chargeable call through BT, no?

Yes, but as BT Company Representative has confirmed, inclusive calls count too.

Which is you CPS calls provider?

Yep, inclusive calls count - which is weekend calls for me. So I'll just prefix the occasional weekend call with 1280. I don't know whether this will appear on Recent Calls though ... does it list all calls, or only ones that cost?

I get my calls and broadband bundled together from Supanet.
