Charged for BT caller display!

I have just had my BT bill and been charged for caller display for not making any chargeable calls.

I have made calls over the weekend on the free minutes but they say they don't count.

Anyone know where this is in writing that plan calls count towards caller display payments.

It would be illogical if they didn't count.

For example, are BT now saying that someone on the Unlimited Anytime Plan (inclusive calls of up to 60 minutes each to all 01/02/03 numbers [except the Channel Islands] at all times) who only makes calls to 01/02/03 numbers (the purpose of paying for the Plan) has to pay?

I do remember reading somewhere on the BT website about "chargeable or inclusive" calls counting but can't find it at the moment.
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.

No, they do say 2 "chargeable" calls a month to get caller display foc.

I think you are thinking of the ts + cs for the discounted line connection deals which requires you to make "chargeable or inclusive" calls during the minimum contract period, otherwise the discount is forfeited.

Maybe if you pay for unlimited anytime plan there are different rules regarding this?

BritBrat's post below (#11) points to the specific wording - it's under BT Telephony Services price terms a fair way down in the drop down he mentions.

That discussion was to do with making calls to get the discounted line connection, not to get free caller display.

I think the debate starts again but, last time it was discussed, inclusive calls were said to count:

I think you are right there Heinz, I have been trying to find the info that said inclusive calls counted, I know it did but maybe they have changed it.

The inclusive calls were mentioned in the ts + cs for the discounted line rental (not foc caller display)!

    eg:

    2. Customers must make at least 30 chargeable or inclusive calls every three month period or 10 chargeable calls or inclusive calls per month if you are billed monthly

Here is a quote I received from CS (UK - not India):

"BT Privacy is a combination of caller display and a listing with the telephone preference service. You will need to activate BT Privacy which is included for customers who make at least six inclusive or chargeable calls (excludes calls made with BT Broadband Talk) with BT every three months. For other customers the charges for caller display are set out in the BT Price List. "

In the term 'inclusive or chargeable calls', the word inclusive refers to free calls in one of our packages, as calls made that are free as part of a BT discount, such as evening and weekend calls free are still applicable in receiving the free caller display.

No, it did say what Hienz and me think it said.

I thought I had a screen shot but cant find it if I did.

Just found it in the T&C:
    BT calling features
    • BT calling features are not available to ISDN or In Contact Plus customers. Other BT calling features restrictions apply to BT Pay&Call customers as set out in paragraph 36 below. Any other restrictions are set out in the BT Price List.

You will need to activate BT Privacy which is included for customers who make at least six inclusive or chargeable calls (excludes calls made with BT Broadband Talk) with BT every three months. • Included with BT Telephony, LUS and BT Basic are the following pay-per-use BT calling features:

Probably typical of BT, but on their privacy at home web page they have contradictory copy about foc caller display, where they only refer to "chargeable" calls:
Customers who are billed monthly must make at least two chargeable calls with BT in that month, otherwise BT reserves the right to charge £1.75 a month for BT Caller Display. Customers who are billed every three months must make at least six chargeable calls within those three months, otherwise BT reserves the right to charge £5.25 a quarter.

EDIT A further thought: They changed Ts & cs recently (30/5/08). Could the charges they are asking you for relate to some period prior to these new ts + cs?

Just phoned up and they confirmed I was right and are refunding the charge for caller display.

It was not easy to find the information.

    Go to this page

Look down the page for "Terms & Conditions" and click it to get the popup.

    Then under "BT calling features"

    33. BT Privacy is a combination of caller display and a listing with the telephone preference service. You will need to activate BT Privacy which is included for customers who make at least six inclusive or chargeable calls (excludes calls made with BT Broadband Talk) with BT every three months. For other customers the charges for caller display are set out in the BT Price List.
