Changing To BT

Options
I am currently with Virgin Media paying around £55 per month for phone, broadband and the most basic tv.

I have an o2 mobile contract and saw that i can get broadband through them for £7.50 per month. However i need to have a BT line and after ringing BT to have a BT line put in it would cost me £125. The other problem is i receive an allowance of webspace through virgin media which i use to host my website and if i switch internet provider could i still get this free web hosting?

Is there any way i can reduce my bills in this situation without having to pay £125 BT connection fee?

Adam, i have just cancelled my Virgin services myself to move back to BT and then O2 Broadband as the saving is alot. The BT engineer fee can be halved to £62.50 by agreeing to an 18 month min-term contract as opposed to a 12 month contract. This is offered as a deal clincher and i had to remind the girl at BT i was informed of the offer when i actually called back to book the engineer.

    Details are here http://www.serviceview.bt.com/list/public/current/FrameworkImpl10126/2-FrameworkImpl133605.htm

If you take this offer you must make at least 10 chargeable calls or inclusive calls per month via BT.

There was no mention of 10 minimum calls when the offer was made or during booking but light users will certainly need to be aware

0800 numbers count as chargeable calls. The charge is zero.

No they dont. I dont know who told you that but its not true (at least in all the info BT advisors are given). INCLUSIVE calls are counted (so people on Option 1 can use their free weekend calls).

Really? Thats very interesting, i wouldnt have realised that without you mentioning it.

I must say though im very disappointed with BT already. I was told when i booked the engineer that i might as well have the Option 2 package as it'll be the same cost as the Option 1 as i'll be taking a minimum 18 month contract because of the half price line installation offer. I queried this at the time of booking as the website shows it to be more expensive and the girl (Lucy) said that as my minimum contract length was 18 months then i qualified for Option 2 at the same price as Option 1, and she assured me it would not cost anything else. The minimum agreed amount i was to pay monthly was to be £22.50 to cover line rental and the cost of the line installation spread over 6 months with the minimum amount going down after that time...all great and i was happy. I called back last night to confirm that i needed to make 10 chargable calls on a monthly basis to not get charged the extra for the line installation and to say i was unhappy this important infomation was not told to me at any point when the deal on phone line installation was offered to me or while i was booking. The girl (Jenna) seemed un-interested, i asked her to confirm the details of my booking and she said i was on Option 1 not 2 and that i would be paying £22.50 per month for the first 6 months. I finished the call happy as Option 1 was really what i wanted as if i had to make chargable calls then it would be easier to do under Option 1 as i would then be paying for my evening calls and im a very light phone user and would barely be able to make the needed 10 chargable calls per month.

This morning i received my welcome letter from BT confirming the date the engineer was due to come but very worryingly it had said i was due for Option 2, i was being charged an additional £3 something for it monthly and my agreed monthly direct debit was £25 not £22.50! I called up very annoyed explaining what had happened and that i had been told Option 2 would cost the same as Option 1 and there was no point in having Option 1 as it would be the same price as i was on a min 18 month contract and i had been told i would be paying £22.50 per month. I said originally all i wanted was the Option 1 package and was told i may as well have the Option 2 as it would cost the same and i that i wanted this sorted. The guy was extremely apologetic but then told me i would have to pay a cancellation fee to move back to Option 1 even though the line had not even been installed yet!!!

To put it bluntly i lost my rag over the phone, and demanded to speak to a supervisor. After going through everything YET AGAIN he tried to put my package back to Option 1 but because it was an open order and the line hadnt been installed yet it was impossible to do until my phone was connected and up and running. Whats happening now is he has assured me i will be switched back to Option 1 as soon as im up and running at no additional cost (which i blatently told i would not pay if they tried charging due to this being their mis-selling and !!!! up) and he raised 2 complaints over the matter.

It remains to be seen how this pans out and i'll know within a week.

What i've learnt from this is that the sales team at BT are either so poorly trained as to not know BT product and inadvertantly mis-inform and mis-sell OR (and im leaning towards this having worked in a sales enviroment for a good few years) they will do or say whatever it takes to make the sale or tell you what you want to get you off the phone. Im sure not everyone is like that, but if the 3-4 people ive spoken to so far can get it so blatantly wrong then anyone else thinking of moving back to BT should be very very wary and double check everything and then check it all again or it will cost you

Since the beginning of February, BT have offered Option 2 free to customers who agree to a 12 month renewable contract. You are billed for the full Option 2 amount and then a credit is automatically applied to take the price down to the 'Option 1' price.

As you would be on a 18 month contract, you could get this too - I suspect BT's Monthly Payment Plan system (where they fix the direct debit amount in advance) can't yet account for the automated credits they will be giving to lower the Option 2 price to option 1 when calculating a fixed monthly payment schedule.

Not if your taking the half price line installation offer where your minimum term contract has to be 18 months as this is not compatable with any other special offers including the option 2 priced as option 1 offer according to BT today. And if you are right and a supervisor got it wrong again then that would be ANOTHER person at BT that doesnt know what they are talking about. Either way, not good so far. All i wanted was Option 1 and the half price installation deal, not this absolute mess and different infomation as to my order and package details from everyone ive dealt with so far.

Woody is correct, the half price connection makes no other special offer availiable.

Both half price connection and free UK calls for 3 months are offers incompatible with any others, otherwise you could sign up for a rolling contract for free evening and weekend calls at no extra cost, and BT would cancel any other tariff contracts you have early.
