BR, leaving work, benefits...

So as of tomorrow I am handing in my notice at work and have to work 4 weeks I think.

I should have £585 left after all the bills etc and I was hoping to use that for another months rent but should I use it for BR fees?

I'm not sure how much LHA I'd get as my place is a room in a shared place and includes all bills.

I am aiming to get any job at the moment but don't want one where I'd be told I can't go BR and will have to live of nothing just to pay the debts.

SOA current:

Income = 1176

Rent = 350
DMP = 350
Phone = 55
Food = 150
Travel = 53
Tuition = 50
Clothes = 20
Emergencies = 20
TOTAL = 1048

New:
Income = JSA

Rent = 350
Phone = 55
Food = ?
Travel = ?
Tuition = 0
Clothes = 20
Emergencies = 20
TOTAL = 445

EDIT: there will most likely be a delay in me actually getting JSA and LHA

  • Debrag - No offence, but why on earth would you hand your notice in with no job to go to???

    I knew I was going to get sacked as I worked for a bank and it was a case of jump or be pushed. My OR told me to hand my notice in even though I don't have a job to go to. At least I will have more chance of getting a job with a good reference from them as if I'd been sacked my ref would have stated that I'd been sacked due to gross misconduct.
  • debrag I would hold on to the money just incase you need it for food etc. If you don't have to use it then go for bankruptcy.

    Good luck with the job hunting.

    Not so. Previous employers are no longer allowed to give a bad reference and most large firms, banks included, simply provide dates you worked for them. This government put paid to companies providing useful references!

    In the current climate there is no way I would leave my job unless I was kicked out (even then I'd try to take them for unfair dismissal).

    Well the OR told me to resign so I did. Alot of job apps ask if you've ever been sacked due to gross misconduct, I'd rather be able to say no than put yes and not get an interview. They say it won't necessarily go against you but if there's others going for the job then I'm bound to go to the bottom of the list if I say yes.
  • I have to confess I've never seen that question on an application form. I would also doubt very much that if you had to leave an FSA regulated role due to BR, that it would be counted as gross misconduct!

    I've been looking for work myself for 2 months after 12 years in recruitment, and my advice now is the same as it has always been - Don't leave a job unless you have something else to go to!

    Well I wasn't going to argue with the OR! My HR department told me that it's classed as gross misconduct and it details it in their policy. My manager also told me I would be dismissed immediatley. I have seen a few job apps that ask the question and they're not particulary high paid jobs. If my OR said it's best to resign who am I to argue??? My house will be eventually repossessed and the person I'm moving in with isn't expecting me to pay anything so if I have to scrape by then so be it. I'll eventually be entitled to benefits and will hopefully find a job, even if it's cleaning. Being with my 2year old son is more important than how much I earn.

    I don't see how companies in the current climate can fire people for going BR? Why would they do this?
