I purchased a toshiba laptop last december well 3 wks ago i was getting alot off error messages up and couldnt get on the internet, i phoned dixons technical helpline they sadi they would take the laptop in to get looked at. Well it went in and they had to replace the hard drive as it broke down or something like that, well last friday the lasptop came back to me and now i still cant get on the internet, i get a message saying that something is installing and it would take minutes well 2 days later the message it still there and still no internet.I phoned the dixon technical line up they said we will go throught the discovery part well we done that and couldnt do it as nothing would happen, so they advised me to phone toshiba up i did that and they were useless just like dixons, they both said i need to now purchase a toshiba discovery disc which will cost me £30 i cant believe this, i thought it went in to be fixed and come back to be running smoothly but no, so where do i go now i have phoned dixons and toshiba and they both dont want to know, i have a £350 laptop here which dont bloody work, i need some advice please as im going mad Thanks

does it have a recovery partition or a system to create a recovery disc?
slim chance but may save you money
if not send it back to dixons saying its not fit for purpose as it does not connect to the internet (and mention other issues etc)and you demand it to be repaired. Quote section 14 of the sale of goods act for the "not fit for purpose" part.
I know this work and applies for hardware but im a bit unsure whether this applies to software issues? someone else may advise you on that.
either way, it is unclear whether your issue is caused by hardware or software so you should definitely ring the tech guys again and request a repair. If they accept then leave a note inside the laptop for the engineers as the reports from when you call are often watered down and unclear so the problem is not always addressed.
Plus watch out for the 21 day mark after you call as you are entitled to a new laptop at this time under their policy.Back by no demand whatsoever.0 -
They charged you What! £30 for a cd! *shakes head in discust*
A toshiba discovery disc comes with the computer when you purchase it... I'm sorry to say £30 is a rip off.
Do you have an operating system (windows xp?, vista?) currently on the computer, like does it boot up, if so could you print screen and post the error your getting?0 -

They should be able to tell if the computer has a recovery partition. Once you have transferred this to disc it is no longer available on the laptop. They should have looked first and advised you prior to undertaking any work.
Have you tried pressing F10 when you turn the laptop on as this takes mine to the recovery section. Not sure if yours will still be available with a new hard drive.£2 Coins Savings Club 2012 is £4.............................NCFC member No: 00005.........

ohh, well they should have restored the laptop to its factory settings, which includes the recover partition usually:/
so dont know what happened there, anyways they can be awkward sometimes, like i said we dont know whether its software or hardware. soo what to do next..
have you tried connecting anything else wirelesly to the router?
what is the error message you recieve?
and have you tried a system restore point (i assume that you are running vista in this case, correct me if im wrong)

I was just suggesting a possible way to find the recovery part of the computer. Hadn't tried to work out the wireless problem.
Re Recovery partition. Mine is still on my laptop and its years old. I've installed un-installed loads over the years and often take it back to factory settings no problems.£2 Coins Savings Club 2012 is £4.............................NCFC member No: 00005.........

Oh, if it has no Operating System on it from having a new hard drive then you need to take it back to !!!!!! dixons and get them to fix it properly. I tell you what I've had my fair share of crap from these companies, they put it on and try and get away with it/ try and charge you for their mistake.
Their staff are poorly trained and remember, the consumer is always right, don't let them tell you otherwise.0 -
New Toshiba's have a recovery partition but most of the Toshiba's have now stopped including a restore disc.
F8 on boot up, you will get a menu and pick re pare my computer (not cert it's called that but it's the top option) it will bring a new menu up and one of the options is to restore to factory settings.
Some new HP's have started doing this as well.0 -
