Sounds like you have an DNS problem. Try using openDNS here.

we are with virgin media too and use a wifi router with it.
It might be the software on the wifi dongle needs to be running to connect as it does on my desktop if I connect with wireless rather than ethernet.
when i couldnt get the ip address to renew on my desktop I went into cmd and typed ipconfig/release waited
then ipconfig/renew and it gave a renewed ip address.
on our laptops, it only needed the internal wifi thingummy running, not a dongle. you do have to go and set it up with the password though in network connections else it can see a wifi connection but not use it. if you dont have the right service packs on your computer it might be having trouble with the encryption level it is set to(WEP orWPA) we did until I used the dongles own software on it and then it would accept it fine

The wifi dongle is not needed as I understand it.

thats how I read it too, but if you are trying to connect using it(the dongle), you might need the software it came with anyway.

On my acer laptop, you must press a button to enable internal wifi and that doesnt seem to use any special software, just windows networking..

I would be inclined to not bother with the dongle if the OP has already got internal wifi as I imagine it will be a simpler process to connect.

Update from my laptop-I woke to find the internet light on,on the router and have internet connection to my laptop.:j
BUT......I have no connection again on my desk top.
I darent press the repair button as i know i will lose connection on the laptop. Its probably something simple but its very frustrating. At least i can test a few things on the laptop.
Thanks again to everybody that answered.

How are you connecting them both?
They say it's genetic, they say he can't help it, they say you can catch it - but sometimes you're born with it

    Some good news then

If your laptop is connected wirelessley then you don't want to go anywhere near the repair button on that.

Is it a cable from your desktop to the router?
Can't see why that should have stopped working.

I`m not. it seems to work on either but not both at the same time.

I'll rephrase. How are you attempting to connect each of them?
