When i click on the wireless connection options, its showing as connected . I am very computer illterate so any advice gratefully received.

You'll have to post more details of what equipment and operating system you have, and what you have done so far to set up the connection

How are you currently connected to the internet?

What is the plug in receiver?

    This sort of thing?
Did the new laptop not have inbuilt wi-fi capability?

yes its like that.Since then i have been told my laptop has built in wifi capability so i dont know that i did need the plug in. the computer is a TOSHIBA SATE P300D-21K
    Screen size: 17 inches
    Processor: AMD Turion DUAL CORE
    Memory (RAM): 3072 MB
    Storage (hard drive): 200 GB
    Operating system: Windows Vista Premium
    HARMON/KARDON SPEAKERS TOO!!
also has cd/dvd writer, webcam, 5in1 media card slots, 4usb's.
I followed the instructions and played the disc for the router. I actually connected to the internet once but when i did my desktop stopped receiving the internet.(my daughter was on it at the time) it seems i have opened up the wireless connection but something is stopping access to the internet. many thanks for the replies.

Is the laptop is wifi capable then no you don't need and should not have been sold the dongle.
From whom did you get the advice to buy the dongle?
If your laptop is indeed wifi enabled then take the dongle back and get your money back

What sort of router do you have?
Is the desktop connected by a cable to the router?
It should not be a problem to have various cabled and wired devices all working through your router to the internet at the same time.

    click on start, search, cmd

highlight cmd, right click, run as administrator

    in the black box, type

    ipconfig

    post the results

Do the same on the desktop (if it's XP you can ignore the administrator bit, just start, run cmd

If they are connected the ip address should be 192.168.2.x or similar. If the number starts with 169, then you aren't connected, which is usually a password or encryption type problem.

I have BELKIN wireless router.I will check to see if the desktop is connected to the router and post back later.
I was told i needed the dongle by a family member not a member of staff in the shop, so no unprofessional advice has been given. Thanks for your help.

I would remove the dongle, plug it in wired, get wired working, then move to getting the installed wireless working.

Wireless can be a pain. First thing to do is make sure the router's getting on the internet.

Turn the laptop's wireless off and connect the laptop directly to the router using an ethernet cable. Test the internetl ike this.

How is the desktop PC connected?

edit: got distracted while researching something else and got beaten to it :D
