advice needed

If i dog bites another person would it automatically get put down? (i know a bite is a bite no matter how small)

Can the owner:
get him neutered and make him wear a muzzle?

or is the only answer putting the dog down?

    Hi

If the dog is on its own property then there is nothing that can be done, but if it bit a child on it's own property, then i'm sure social services would be involved.
If the dog bit off it's property then it is up to the courts to determine what happens, they dont always get pts and sometimes get a restraining order i.e wear muzzle, training classes.

    Hope it helps.

It depends on so many things......

If the person got bitten trying to separate fighting dogs
If the dog was on secure private property
    If the dog was provoked

TBH, it all depends on the magistrate if the dog owner ends up in court, they can decide on a control order rather than destruction....but the decision is theirs and all a dog owner can do is put up a robust defence and the above "excuses" have been accepted in the past.

If it was my dog that had bitten someone I would attempt to keep it out of court by any legal means possible, probably by appealing to the person bitten and putting any measures in place that would reassure them.

How long is a piece of string... No it doesn't always get put down - but without more detail like mentioned by other posters then it's impossible to even give you a vague idea...
Main example would be if a dog bit someone who was trying to break up a dog fight - police etc wouldn't usually be the slightest interested in this as the dog didn't attack the human - they simply got in the way. On the other hand if the dog directly attacked the person with no provokation and drew blood then it would be a police matter and would 99% go to court where a judge would make the call - if there was a medical reason for the attack (dog was in pain through undiagnosed condition till then etc) it would probably only result in a fine, if the dog is judged to be dangerous it would be destroyed. I've not personally heard of a judge ordering the dog to simply wear a muzzle and be kept under control - it should after all ALWAYS be under control and the incident should have never happened in the first place - kind of like a judge saying "well you know you shouldn't drink and drive, now you've hit someone with your car whilst drunk you know why, so in future I am ordering you to actually obey the law"...

  • No, it depends on so many factors - when I was a kid my dog bit the electric man, but got his trousers rther than his leg, so a grovelling apology sorted it! (collie x ankle nipping dog who tried to round up people!)

My mum's dog bit me the other day - but I was standing on her tail (accident!) at the time and I think it was her only way of letting me know - I didn't realise till I felt teeth on either side of my calf!! To her credit though she didnt really apply any presure and let go as soon as I got off her tail!!

If my dog bit me, there is no way she would get put down, if she bit someone else and they were understanding and didn't want to press charges, she wouldn't, however, if they went to the police and it went to court, then it may be a possibility. However the court may also take into consideration any extenuating circumstances - like was the dog provoked, and PTS is now not the only option even if the dog was seeen to have been 'dangerously out of contrl'- other measures like the owner ensuring a mzzle is worn may well be considered enough.

Obviously, the extent of any injuries or damage would also need to be considered, but in the right circumstances any dog can bite, it does not necesarily make it a menace!

my dog escaped yesterday from our house, it ran next door and bit the neighbours gardener. my dad says he wont take the change of him doing it again on a child and although we can put a muzzzle on him, he cant prevent a freak accident like this again.

he was meant for a breeding dog but obv that cant happen... ive pleaded all last night and this morning but he wont budge. i know my dad loves him but he said hes responsible for him and couldnt live with the guilt if he bit a child...

i am gutted- havent slept all night and all ive done is cry.

he snapped at someone at easter but the person came over when he was tied up against a tree with food....

i know it would be unthinkable if he hurt a child but i just think if we got him neutered AND muzzled it would decrease the chances.... but my dad says he cant consider chances

devastated- we only had him 2 years nearly he isnt even old! :(

EDIT: ** i dont think the man will press charges after it happened he said "he alright" meaning the dog

  • A few more questions...

did it break the skin or injure the man - he doesnt sound to have been too upset by the incedent?

what sort of dog is it? what is his temprement like usually?

is he yours or your dads dog? If he is your dog I think it should be your responsibility, unless you are under 18.

have you had a health check on him to make sure there isnt a medical reason for his aggression?

Why was he tied to a tree with food?
  • Thanks for all your advice but i just phoned my mum there and my daddy just left with the dog.

    I am heart broken.
