How do I keep my cat off of the working surfaces

Recently saw a gadget for this. Its an air cannister with a movement sensor, when kitty sets it off looking for chicken it goes psst, loud enough to make the cat jump off straight away. It was good because it worked even when you are out.
I`m not sure if you can buy one though as it was on an inventions type programme.

buy a couple of cheap mouse traps and set them put some newspaper over them and leave a tasty morsel of chicken on top
kitty jumps up traps go off kitty has heart attack and doesnt go back
in our case it worked with one cat with this cat
the old fart sneaked up behind her and in his ex sgt major drill voice shouted in GETT DOON YOU 'ORRIBLE LITTLE CAT
cat leaped 10 feet in the air and hasnt gone up there since0 -
The tip about using a water pistol is the best one. I found some tiny water pistols (Poundland or similar) and kept filled in various places.
When sprayingwater say ' Psssssst' loudly. It's harmless to cat and kitchen and it works. Also the cat doesn't associate the water with owner and the 'punishment ' can be applied from a distance (doorway or adjoining room). After a time you only need say
'Psssst' and not use the water pistol !
We trained our two cats this way and have also used this method to stop them going near the bird table in the garden near the kitchen window. They run now if they even hear the kitchen window being opened !0 -
you cant - they may not do it when you are there, but i know by the fur thats left behind that she's been up there when i've been out. of course by the time i'm back in the kitchen she is in her bed asleep and looking innocent!0

id go with the water pistol. certainly make the furball think twiceYou're not drunk if you can lie on the floor without holding on0

Try orange peel - by all accounts they hate it. You could try rubbing the surfaces with it?
Then let me know if it works. If you lend someone a tenner and never see them again, it was probably worth it.0 -
We always use a water pistol to train our cats where not to go - they hate it!I'm mad!!!! :rotfl::jand celebrating everyday every year!!!0

Hi,
I tried the orange peel and rubbing worktops with orange and it didn't work
I have 2 cats that in my old house used to do what the hell they liked and it really p$ssed me off..nothing would stop em. Since moving house to a nearby village they are outside all day then at night they sleep under the carport or in the garage if its abit cold...so problem solved!....The only thing is..now they outside alot they kill birds and mice EVERY DAY. I don't know which is worse!
Anyone know a way to break there natural instinct and stop this?? Weve tried the trick of having a bell on the collars so they can be heard sneaking up, but one of the little b@ggers somehow gets them off! Weve had 3 get lost (brand new with engraved tag) in the past few weeks!! :mad:love my little man he is amazing :j0 -
On the rspb website www.rspb.org.uk there is a cat deterrent device. It emits a sound which cats do not like.
If you place it in your kitchen or on the counter top it might stop the cats from jumping on it.
To buy it you need to go to their shopping site.
