How do I keep my cat off of the working surfaces

How do I keep my cat off of the working surfaces in the kitchen ?

An odd topic for this site I know but the wife is spending a fortune on cleaning prods.

I tried covering the surfaces with tin foil but all that did was make the kitchen look like something from buck rogers.

Any ideas would be gratefully received, and yes I have considered getting rid of her but she's too cute. Are british blues known for being dense ?

I trained mine from kittens by lifting them off each time they jumped up, but it is more difficult with older cats. One thing which does work is double-sided sticky tape, but this would be awkward on a work surface. Perhaps you could stick some on a piece of card and place it there when you are not preparing food.

Was you refering to the wife or the cat when you said she was too cute to get rid of?

    Best of luck ... Julie

    shotgun? snares?

I think the best solution is to cover your work surfaces with lions p!ss from the local zoo. Works a treat I believe and who knows how tasty your casseroles may be in future...... ;D ;D

She is still a kitten, so hopefully still trainable (if a little interlectually challenged).

Obviously the wife is cute too and she doesn't leave footprints all over the surfaces.

I shall try the double sided tape, thankyou julie, failing that I'm sure she would make quite a fetching pair of gloves ;D

We have 2 cats and our nightmare was chewing :(
We have stopped this now by using bitter bite from pet shops. We also squirted them with water from a water pistol(not a super soaker!!) they soon learnt. It didnt hurt them and they soon learnt. Start early and be consistent. Good Luck! ::)

If its still a kitten, now's your chance to train it. When it jumps up, shout "NO!" or "OFF!" at it - if it doesn't respond then pick it up and place it on the floor. Do this every single time it happens - always use the same word with the same angered tone. Eventually your cat will leave the surface when you say the word rather than you having to remove it. And if you caught it in time, it should actually just avoid the surface in future.

Also, as this is a behavioural change, you may also find that your cat will stop doing other "naughty" things when you say the keyword. Either way, it can take a few weeks to sort this sort of thing out. It works in the same principal as the "rub their nose in it" toilet training methods, but as you are not really punishing it, it will take a little longer.

I got two kittens almost a year ago now..................never had a problem with work surfaces after using the water spray a few times ::)

Got a squirty bottle filled with clean water.................if they go on the surface .......squirt............they jump down.....after a little bit just pointing the squirty bottle works ;D ;D ;D

Then they just stop getting up....worked a treat with my two ;D

But when it comes to clawing the suite.........nothing works ::)..they seem to think the squirts of water are part of the fun...............cats are strange ::)

I had this problem with my cat when I got her.She was 3 yrs old but didn't take her long to get used to the ''training''.EVERY time she jumped on the kitchen work top or if I caught her there I would shout GET OFF.It only took a week or two and she didn't bother no more. Also I don't like her in the house too often coz she moults too much (she has a basket in a large heated porch) and if she does come in the lounge all I have to shout is GET OUT and shes gone!

I read this for dog training once but I'm sure it will work for cats too.Get an old pop bottle and put a few dried peas in it and when they do something you don't want them to (jumping on work surfaces) shake it near them. The noise should scare them away. Then next time even before they have done it but look like they are going to shake it as a warning so they know you mean business.

    Hope this helps.

    ;D ;D ;D
