simply put - connect router to your modem instead of connecting PC to router. Router then sends signals out. The PC that wants to use it must have a receiving device, - most laptops come with WiFi built in nowadays. For PC's, you can buy a wireless receiver card, either internal or external (latter better to use). And thats it
Obviously read the manuals to set your security. Signals leave the house and outsiders can pick them up.
Routers also act as a hardware firewall adding more security to your PC.

Don't spend five pounds to dry clean a shirt. Donate it to the charity shop instead. They'll clean it and put it on a hanger. Next morning buy it back for two pounds.

    Can't go wrong with Netgear.

You surely have never visited the netgear forum :)

But I don't have much problem with my Netgear DG834GT when I had an ADSL line before. Currently happy with Linksys WRT54GS on NTL broadband.

that's an old 802.11b model, 11Mb/s max speed, that's why it's cheap. It will still work ok though.., but a 802.11G model would be better 54Mb/s .. Netgear..

Afternoon everyone. We have NTL broadband serving one home P.C. I've just acquired a laptop, WiFi enabled and understand I need to get a cable router. I've looked at Netgear RP614 which I can get at a good price (£30.50). Will it do the job? Any advice would be much appreciated. Thanks. Tim.

We too have ntl broadband on home computer. I acquired a psp and wanted to go on the net with it so i bought a http://play.com/play247.asp?pa=srmr&page=title&r=PSP&title=866456

for £17.99. Set it up and got the psp working on the net.
Tried our wifi enabled laptop which found this device and lets us browse the internet and receive emails wirelessly. Don't pay loads for net working gear just buy one of these:j

"Connect your PSP wirelessly to the internet - it's quick and easy.

Plug WiFi Max into any internet enabled PC to create a high speed wireless access point. WiFi Max provides a true wireless 'G' access point, 5 times faster than a standard WiFi connection. You can connect multiple consoles and even other WiFi devices including laptops and PDA's."

You only have to plug it in the usb port!

Don't you need a second PC turned on all the time with that, and it has no firewall/NAT protection.

EVERY hardware company will have people moaning that there products dont work. If you think netgears forum looks bad go look for d-link, belkin.

and no, i dont really go vist netgear forums as I have never needed to :)
