It is illegal to sell crest strips etc in the uk and Europe. Which have led a campaign to stop e bay and amazon advertising these illegal products although it is still possible to find them. Because they are illegal to sell here a large proportion are counterfeit and many people have had damage to teeth and gums because if it. Because of this trading standards have started to crack down on suppliers of illegal whitening products ie those containing over 0.1% hydrogen peroxide who supply to anyone except dentists.

I'm using Crest strips at the moment. Don't like them as they slip.

When in the USA I buy Listerine strips, which I find great. Will be stocking up again soon.

AS the US is so litigious, I don't understand why a product can be considered safe there but not in the UK.

Its not just the UK it's the whole of Europe,NZ, and Australia. There have been problems in the US with whitening strips as well but as there is a huge profit to be made in a growing market litigation can be taken in their stride, and as many US citizens have little access to routine dental care and the rates of litigation are actually much higher in the UK than the US (surprising but true) it's not that surprising.

There is a massive thread on this including experiences from beauticians who got ripped off. Insurances paid for but no paper work, only insurance companies used based in Pakistan or Cyprus. In short it is illegal people have been prosecuted for illegal practice of dentistry... Nothing to do with what you use but by the fact you put your hands in someones mouth and diagnose them suitable for tooth whitening you have broken the law.
Save your money and do something legal in the beauty line.

Read the last few pages of the tooth whitening thread it's all relevant to you ... Here are two posts to get you started

Jaspar toothwhitening is by law practicing dentistry and it is illegal for a non dentist to do it regardless of the system they use. I'm sorry but you are wrong here's the proof from the GDC website

    25 March 2011

Defendant pleads guilty in tooth whitening case

The General Dental Council (GDC), has successfully prosecuted a non-registrant for performing tooth whitening, which the GDC regards as the practice of dentistry.

On Wednesday at City of Westminster Magistrates Court in London 48 year old Paul William Hill of Warrington, Director of PW Healthcare Consulting Limited, pleaded guilty to four offences including practising dentistry while not registered as a dentist or dental care professional between 2 October 2010 and 11 March 2011. Under the Dentists Act 1984 it is an offence for non-registrants to practise or be prepared to practise dentistry.

Mr Hill has been ordered to pay a total of £6,265 in fines and costs and PW Healthcare Consulting Limited, which traded nationally as Style Smile Clinics, has been ordered to pay a total of £6,765. The amounts include costs of £5,500 for the GDC.

The GDC launched the case last year after it received hundreds of complaints from members of the public and dental professionals about tooth whitening treatment being provided by individuals who are not registered dental professionals.

You may want to read this http://news.sky.com/skynews/Home/Den...n_Damage_Teeth at least someone knows the law... quote "At the North London Epilation Clinic, the technician seemed well versed in the law.
"You are supposed to be a dentist to do any of this. The only way you can get insurance to do this is if we don't touch anything that goes in your mouth. You do it yourself. All you do is hire the machine from us. So it's all sort of loopholes."
But the Department of Health considers teeth whitening as dentistry. And the General Dental Council says giving instruction on dental procedures also falls foul of the Act."

but just in case you don't here is a snippet........The British Association of Beauty Therapy and Cosmetology said only dentists should whiten teeth. It is helping trading standards officials to bring prosecutions against clinics who break the law.

This represents 15,000 beauticians and the association stopped supplying insurance to beauty therapists doing whitening some years ago. The Insurances that are still offered by dodgy whitening "training", insurance such as the Irish association , becomes invalid as soon as someone does something illegal in the UK eg assessing someones mouth or carrying out a proceedure in the mouth.

NB from the salon geeks forum the consensus is beauticians etc should not be carrying out this proceedure .http://www.salongeek.com/biz-geek/13...whitening.html I hope you read the next part of the thread about no one being interested about prosecutions..... the bit where the lady had to have root treatment because illegal whitening killed her tooth off.

    Hi All

Just been looking at some photos from a few years back and compared to now my teeth look very white! I'm a heavy coffee drinker and hadn't realised how stained my teeth are becoming :-(

Can anyone recommend a teeth whitener bleach or brand? Just looked on ebay but didn't know what was reputable - don't want to end up with dayglo white or anything too dramatic - can anyone testify for a brand?

    Thanks
    Rebecca
  • I bought a kit from tesco (Hollywood smile or something similar). It was a box with two rubber gum shields, a tube of stuff that you rub on your teeth after brushing, a tube of whitening gel that your squeeze into the gum shields and wear on your teeth for a few minutes, then a tube of whitening toothpaste (that tastes like bubblegum!) that you brush with afterwards. I used it once every couple of weeks to combat coffee staining, as no matter how often I brushed, flossed and used mouthwash, I found I still got some staining on my front teeth. Now I use it for special occasions, like nights out or when I think my picture might be taken, and I use Pearl Drops daily. Both these techniques have made a difference for me, although neither is quite as wonderful as the packaging promises ;)
