    Yes.

That's why the trays should be made and checked by someone who can actually see you. - not mail order, or DIY.

Personally, I wouldn't use anything higher than 15% carbamine peroxide on a patient of mine. Not without some way of masking out the gums.

I worry about some of the products that are marketed as 'peroxide free' as well. These are often acid based, and would do considerable damage to the teeth if not used VERY carefully. And if they are used that carfully, they would have no effect on the whiteness of the teeth!
    How to find a dentist.
    1. Get recommendations from friends/family/neighbours/etc.
    2. Once you have a short-list, VISIT the practices - dont just phone. Go on the pretext of getting a Practice Leaflet.
    3. Assess the helpfulness of the staff and the level of the facilities.
    4. Only book initial appointment when you find a place you are happy with.

Thanks Toothsmith, is there anything apart from going to a dentist that you would reccommend apart from bicarbonate soda?

    Many thanks

There are too many reasons as to why a patient may feel their teeth need whitening.

Staining, dark colour within the teeth, motteling on the surface of the teeth, old fillings discolouring etc..

There are also many lifestyle reasons for staining. Coffee, smoking, red wine, use of mouthwashes, tea etc..

I would need to know (by looking at it) exactly what the problem was before I could recommend anything to change the situation.

This is why I feel over the counter products are a waste of money, and internet products are frankly dangerous.

Occasionally, by pure chance, someone may buy an appropriate product to help the problem they have, but with so many different problems and so many different products, it's a minor miracle if they do.

Yet it is much more likely that harm will be done. Especially if someone is tempted to try more of a product, or leave it on longer than recommended, to see if that will have an effect.

My advice for anyone wanting whiter teeth HAS to be, speak to your dentist about it.

  • I took a rapid white kit to ask my dentist if it was OK to use she said yes as I have a discoloured front tooth where another dentist gave me two lovely root canals ending up some years later in an Apecectomy at the local Dental Hospital 3 hours with your gum peeled back nice!.

  • This is an interesting thread. I don't mean to brain-suck you Toothsmith but can you recommend a mouthwash which wouldn't stain my teeth?

By the way my dentist says I have beautiful teeth :D (No fillings etc.)

They all do over time to some degree.

Why do you feel you need a mouthwash?

I am a fee charging WoM Mortgage broker.
I now no longer give information and opinion within the Mortgage boards, because a number of posters who, having approached me professionally, agreed my fee-which has been been made very clear at the outset, taken my advice (normally cancelling a [home visit] meeting at short notice) have then approached one of the fee-free brokers on here to arrange the very same deal I have advised.
Whilst I totally concur with the ethos of "money saving"- abusing the goodwill of a professional who provides a quality service is taking it too far!
